FRACTURE REPAIR: This juvenile Blacksmith lapwing (Vanellus armathus) was taken to Fourways Vet Hospital for a fractured lower leg. They expertly stabilised the fracture and the bird was transferred to our facility for further treatment. Luckily the break was a mid-shaft tarsometatarsus fracture and all the nerves and blood vessels were in tact. This meant that the fracture could be fixed and Dr K placed an external fixator while anaesthetic monitoring was done by Dr Cristina Flamini. He recovered well from the procedure and soon he was standing on the operated leg. His pins will be removed in the next 3 weeks and he should make a full recovery. He is on a course of antibiotics and pain medication, and thankfully has a heathy appetite!
