#FACTS MAR. 24, 2018. #Celebrity endorsements are amongst the oldest and most ubiquitous forms of advertising. In many ways it’s a match made in heaven: big brands get to piggyback on the caché of #celebrities whilst the star walks away with a huge paycheck for a minimal amount of actual work (save the appearances and promotional campaign). However in recent years the “genius’s in the marketing departments” have thought of a more “authentic” way, to get more bang from their celebrity endorsed buck - The Celebrity as Creative Director. As #CreativeDirector the celebrity’s got two main duties, the first – a twist on the classic endorsement deal that involves showing up at conferences, plugging the brand in interviews, and generally being the ‘face’ of the product. The second duty involves product development, whereby the artist is affiliated with the announcement/subsequent rollout of a new product. Whether they have a decisive input in the actual development is different story.
In #KanyeWest now infamous interview with #ZaneLowe he hit out at a growing trend in which celebrities are 'hired’ as creative directors of large brands or corporations; “Like I went, I remember when I was, dropping William Morris, right, and then Sarah Newkirk at that time said “Before you drop them, go meet with Ari Emanuel” and I sat with him and I said, “Ari, I’m an inventor” and he goes on to tell me about the way it works and what he said is “You are a celebrity. So basically what’s going to happen is, there’s product here, and this is where you end up, right here. If you can communicate this product, you can make money off the product, because look at #Gaga She’s the Creative Director of #Polaroid .” I like some of the Gaga songs. What the fuck does she know about cameras?”
Rant or not - #Kanye got a point - what did #ladyGaga know about cameras - apart from being in front of them?
