Promise of rain....

"Winter is coming"

To quote the all popular Game of Thrones

Green Point being seduced by the prospect of a wet winter. As many know, Cape Town has been suffering from a severe lack of water so this taster of change is a well loved one.

#zazimzam2018 J-71.

I took this ostrich picture in March 2016 near Mopani camp in Kruger National Park (South Africa), a week after the first rains in this area for almost three years. I had come to the same place almost two years before in the middle of a drought and there was not a green grass shoot in sight for miles around (I'm going to publish more photos). It is always amazing to see how fast the savannah can turn green again. Of course à few showers are not enough to regenerate an ecosystem and the plants that grow first are not necessarily those that herbivores can eat but it is still a good example of resilience.

"When water does come to the former Kingdom of Lo, in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, it is often sudden and violent. A storm may boil over a mountain ridge, a glacial dam may collapse, or meltwater may surge through a gorge. But slower, less-visible changes are forcing the region’s farmers and herders to reconsider their relationship with water and each other". Photo: S.Choi Flickr

Friday...... kicks.
Wearing my new Perri Cutten top, still had its price tag on it and shoes I found while opshopping with clients in Sydney last weekend. I did offer them to my clients first 😉
Tomorrow doing the same in Tamworth.

#winter has been hard in the High Atlas #mountains. This nomad couple have lost over 400 goats to the cold. Traditionally they would have wintered in the #sahara, but after so many years of #drought they didn't believe the grazing would return. It did, but with it came the most savage winter in fifty years. Ruined now, they are abandoning their traditional way of life and retreating to a village. #climatechange #globalwarming

Week 8: Definitely Dreaming Photography Challenge. BnW!
Have you ever been hit with the harsh reality of life??
I was this week. The extent of drought really hit home when I headed to the Upper Hunter. Hats off to Farmers, their livestock and the small communities who are struggling at this time. Your determination, passion & spirit is contagious. You have my upmost respect!

Sonam Wangchuck is an engineer who came up with an innovative and simple way to provide water to his city of Ladakh, a cold climate desert at an elevation of 11,500 feet in the Southern Himalayas: creating a glacier of ice that melts in warmer drought seasons.
.
Mountain glacial runoff is Ladkh’s primary source of water, which meets the city’s demands in the winter. Yet in the warmer spring, with a lack of rainfall, the city falls into a drought.
.
Wangchuck creates a pipeline that draws the freshwater sources into the village during the winter, creating a confined sprinkler system that makes an ice glacier as shown in the photo above. When the spring comes, the water melts into the ground where the residents have planted seeds so they can introduce greenery into the area in order to create a “desert oasis capable of surviving all weather conditions” as cited in the article.
.
This is amazing!!! Engineers like Wangchuck are my idols. @goodnewsnetwork is the source of this article, and the article has a 3 minute interesting video explaining the above and how it works. I recommend taking a look. Link is in bio for the day!
