Feline Fun Facts – More about Black Jaguars and Black Leopards
As we learned in a previous Feline Fun Fact, the black leopard and the black jaguar are not a separate subspecies. It is a melanistic color variation and occurs only 5% of the time. The recessive agouti gene is responsible for the over-abundant distribution of black pigment (melanin) within the hair shaft which results in the dark color variation in big felines. Interestingly enough, however, the agouti gene is NOT responsible for black fur in domestic house cats. Even though the black leopard and black jaguar are dark in color, they DO still have spots. They are just more difficult to see. There are studies that suggest that the melanistic felines are fitter to survive as they are better able to camouflage themselves while hunting and less conspicuous to predators.
Melanism exists in 11 of the 37 felid species, including servals and jaguarondi. Of the felines in the Panthera biological family (lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars), only the black leopard and black jaguar exist today. Black tigers were common until the turn of the 20th century. The last known marbled black tiger ever known was killed in 1992 in the cane fields of India. There has never been a high occurrence of black lions, likely due to the extreme heat that a black lion would endure in the grasslands of Africa.

Twigs and leopards, Twigs and leopards..... To come up with a name can sometimes take FOREVER. You mix weird words from one end to another and absolutely nothing sounds remotely like a title or a name that would ever refer to what its all about.
But here we go. Its about, nature, fashion, living in Ibiza, family, homedecor, enjoying life and what ever comes to my mind. I'm just getting started so bare with me but I'm pretty sure that this is going to be a lot of fun
