I went to see both the exhibition at the #RoyalAcademy of paintings that once belonged to Charles Ist and the film Call me by Your Name yesterday.
The Academy was as busy as Picadilly Station. And as with most exhibitions commences with a claustrophic space for intense label reading and then ejacuates everyone into salons, where the great dance is slowly abbandoned.I found myself unable to relax only connecting with minor figures in the paintings: ones that were looking the other way when the drama unfolded or mongrels curled up under grand tables. What lingers in my mind are small paintings on vellum and some delicate drawings by Holbein.
The film however was gentle and immersive. While the central character Elio played with amazing sensitivity by #TimothéeChalamet , gains and loses his first love , surrendering to all that intensity and passion : around him Nature and Time are as oblivious as the old nonnas shelling peas in the Summer heat.
Perhaps this is the same lesson the Old Masters wanted to teach us? #charlesthefirst#royalacademy#bassano#callmebyyourname#elio#oliver#queerfilm#instagay#oldmasters#blockbusters#cinema#greatart#humandrama#seeingart#royslacademyofart#londonexhibitions
