Martha: I promise you, Mr. Smith. We will find a way out. If we can travel to the moon than we can travel back. There 's got to be a way.
The Doctor: It's not Smith. That's not my real name.
Martha: Who are you than?
The Doctor: I'm the Doctor.
Martha: Me too, if I ever pass my tests. What is it than, Dr. Smith?
The Doctor: Just the Doctor.
Martha: How d'you mean, just the Doctor?
The Doctor: Just. The Doctor.
Martha: What, people call you the Doctor?
The Doctor: Yeah.
Martha: Well I'm not. As far as I'm concerned you've gotta earn that title.
The Doctor: Well I better have a start than.
Listening to this in chicago at 9am was a weird experience, i was dreading it after the f*cking wankstain that the dollhouse was and i anticipated this to be the same but oh boy was i mistaken.
The story is formatted marvellously, first half being flashbacks then the next half in the present which is a personal favourite story structure of mine so i enjoyed it. M LeDuc (the main protagonist) is introduced amazingly in the flashbacks as is madame Berber (a huge red herring in the plot). The modern set parts were amazing and Herr Grau was one of the best torchwood characters to date. He takes a typical nazi SS officer and turns it up to 11, absolutely psychotic and entertaining as hell. You love to hate him, and when he gets his comeuppance at the end it is joyous because hes such a vindictive bastard it makes it so satisfying. The scene where he tortures LeDuc by dipping his head in scalding water was so dark and reminded me that this was a torchwood plot as only in torchwood do you get messed up stuff like that.
The 'villain' was this virus that takes the internalised evil and changes peoples physiology accordingly. Only nazis are affected and it turns them into grotesque beasts who are not described so you can imagine the most depraved thing you want in your head.
The way we find out the cause of the transformations is shocking, in a powerful, shocking and intense scene which is absolutely transfixing. We are given so many red herrings that when the truth is revealed it blew me away, LeDuc changes completely and its incredible as is Grau's death, every aspect of the twist is amazing especially how we are led to believe that Berber is responsible. When it turns out she had no idea what was going on its so clever especially how she ends up recruited by torchwood, a fantastic development as i love her character.
Final thoughts are that this story was fucking marvellous, and is how should do a spin off within the torchwood universe. A brilliant scipt, flawless acting and brilliant sound design make for 55 minutes of pure delight listening to this story, and i thoroughly hope we see more from this torchwood team down the line.
