Jean-Michel Basquiat - African American artist born in Brooklyn in 1960. He went from being homeless & unemployed to selling a single painting for up to $25,000 years later. Basquiat began as a graffiti artist but is known as a neo-expressionist. He passed away at age 27 in 1988 of a drug overdose.
On May 18, 2017, at a Sotheby's auction, Basquiat's 1982 painting, also Untitled, set a new record high for ANY U.S. artist at auction, selling for $110,500,000, beating his mentor Andy Warhol's previous record.
