“I consider the Dan David Prize a recognition of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, as much as a recognition of my work.” – Dr. Mary-Claire King

Join us in congratulating BCRF researcher Dr. King who received the prestigious Dan David Prize for her pioneering work in breast cancer genetics. Dr. King was the first to show that breast cancer is inherited in some families, as the result of mutations in the gene that she named BRCA1.

We are excited to announce Shawn Szakelyhidi will be joining our coaching staff again this year.
Coach Szak is one of the greatest all-time coaches in the Fredericksburg area. He has over 20 years of coaching experience, most of which as head coach at Colonial Forge HS where he started the program and led them to 15 winning seasons out of the 16 years he was there. His most impressive stat however, may be that out of all the players that came out of his program, only one did not go on to pursue a college degree, a testament to the impact he had on his player’s lives. He is also the first and only member of the Colonial Forge Baseball Hall of Fame. Coach Szakelyhidi’s knowledge and experience has been a huge asset to the camp.
Don’t miss out in the opportunity to be coached by Coach Szakelyhidi and other great coaches. Click the link in the bio and sign up today.

“When we’re not in the lab, we love being outdoors. We like to bike, fish, and ski. Steffi also decided a few years back to participate in a triathlon each year, and has kept up with her goal. Skiing is a family favorite as seen in this photo. We were fortunate to make many great friends in Pittsburgh, with whom we often went skiing in the Laurel Highlands, in addition to trips to slightly larger mountains (like this one). Whether we’re collaborating in the lab or making memories with our family, we’re so grateful for moments like these. We’ve come a long way and we couldn’t have made it this far without each other. We would like to thank our mentors who guided us along the way, our daughters, and breast cancer patients who are partners in our shared mission to #BeTheEnd of breast cancer. Thank you all for following! Happy Valentine’s Day!” – Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich

“Adrian’s research has recently focused on the use of systems biology and big data (particularly genomics) in both understanding breast cancer progression and treatment. His BCRF-supported work shows the evolution of genomic changes in metastasis and the discovery of recurrent fusions in the estrogen receptor in advanced hormone-resistant breast cancer. This work requires use of high performance computing, like the one Adrian and his former trainee Ryan Hartmaier are standing in front of in this photo. This work is also supported by the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Adrian now works with groups performing various machine learning techniques on both genomic and healthcare data.” – Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich

“A major focus of Steffi’s BCRF-funded research is focused on invasive lobular breast carcinoma (ILC), a type of breast cancer that begins in milk-producing glands (lobules) of the breast. While ILC is the second most commonly diagnosed type of invasive breast cancer, it’s greatly understudied.
Steffi was drawn to ILC since these tumors are almost exclusively estrogen receptor positive and mechanisms of endocrine resistance have not been delineated in this disease subtype. She organized the first International ILC Symposium in Pittsburgh in 2016, supported by BCRF and others. This is where she met Leigh Pate (seen in the second photo), who attended the meeting as a patient affected by ILC. Steffi and Leigh talked, and later met in Seattle where Leigh lives. Together they decided to start a patient advocacy group, now known as the Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance (LBCA). It didn’t take Leigh much time to recruit many other committed and passionate women (and men) to the cause, and they motivate Steffi on a daily basis!” – Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich

“The WCRC has grown tremendously since its foundation. Today it is a a collaboration between UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Magee-Womens Research Institute. Over the last 9 years the WCRC has expanded and has members performing research in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We are fortunate to have outstanding collaborations with medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, pathologists, biostatisticians, bioinformaticians and others, that has allowed us to ask key clinically relevant questions. Nancy Davidson, who led to us to Pittsburgh, left the Steel City a couple years ago to become executive director of the Fred Hutch/University of Washington Cancer Consortium. We miss her and will always treasure the time we spent as colleagues.” – Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich .

“In 2010 we were recruited by Nancy Davidson (BCRF Scientific Advisory Board Member) to the University of Pittsburgh to develop a Women’s Cancer Research Center. The family (and cat) drove the 1500 miles from Texas to Pennsylvania. This was obviously a major move for the family, and the girls were not too excited – but welcoming the loving Labrador Sam to the family helped! And the people of Pittsburgh were incredibly welcoming and we met some great neighbors who made the transition all the much easier.” – Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich

“We got married in 1995 and have two daughters, Paula and Nicola. Their last name is pretty unique: Lee-Oesterreich, but they sometimes shorten it to Lee-O. Due to our busy lives it wasn’t always easy when the girls were small. However, both of us took our equal share in parenting and housework. We were efficient and “didn’t sweat the small stuff”. The girls gained a certain level of independence being born to two hard working scientists. Steffi also heeded advice from leading women in the field, including Drs. Marie Claire King and Nancy Davidson, which included getting help with taking care of the home, making sure to get a babysitter for date nights, and taking the family on a vacation outside of bringing the kids along to breast cancer conferences.
Today the girls are 22 and 19 years old and both attend the University of Pittsburgh. Paula is a senior studying biology and would like to become a physician assistant. Nicola is a sophomore studying international area studies and is interested in politics. Both express that they don’t want a career in breast cancer research, but are proud of the work their parents have accomplished.” – Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich

“Our story began in the early 1990’s. We met by chance in San Antonio, Texas during our postdoctoral fellowships. Steffi, who is originally from Germany, was recruited by the late Bill McGuire, a pioneer in breast cancer research, and then trained under Kent Osborne and Suzanne Fuqua (both of whom are BCRF researchers). Adrian, who hails from England, trained in the same group with Doug Yee. The first two photos were taken early in our careers when we had just become assistant professors. In one, we are discussing revision of a manuscript. The reviews weren’t bad and the work was subsequently accepted for publication! In the other, Steffi is pregnant with our eldest daughter – the lab was kind enough to through her a baby shower!
In the breast cancer world, San Antonio is known as the host city for San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS). However, when we first attended the conference back in 1993, SABCS was nothing more than a small meeting. Today it has grown into the largest and most comprehensive conference on breast cancer research in the world. We are both grateful to Kent Osborne and others for giving us the chance to attend, and also be involved in planning the conference. The last photo was taken in December 2017 at the 40th SABCS.” – Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich

Hello @BCRFCure followers! Happy Valentine’s Day! We’re Drs. Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich, BCRF researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. We share a lot in common. We both hold degrees in biochemistry, studied breast cancer for our PhDs and have dedicated our careers to better understanding the disease. But we also share a life outside the lab. We have been married for 23 years! On this special day, we’re thrilled to take over BCRF’s account and share what our life is like as colleagues and a couple.
