Mason Cooley — 'Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.' ★
I could put any book here and be happy with it. I had a difficult childhood and books were my escape. I'd sink into the pages and melt into the ink and for a little bit, I'd lose the world around me. ★
Be still my reclusive heart, be still. Good Morning, Midnight is a brilliant piece of debbie downer the likes of which I haven't come across before. How is this my first Rhys? Saturated in melancholia and self pity, this slim classic took me a solid week to get through but not without the help of some apéritifs. Now I'm digesting it. There were times I felt strongly and empathised with our narrator, Sasha Jansen. My god but she had the world and human beings all figured out - how horrible humans are akin to hyenas.
"People talk about the happy life, but that's the happy life when you don't care any longer if you live or die." What should one do when they've failed at everything in life? Why you drown your sorrows and miseries in alcohol of course.
"What are you? I am instrument, something to be made use of..." When you're made to feel like nothing and reduced to a mere speck of nothing, naturally death seems appealing if not fitting as the next step.
Whiskey and brandy is always within reach and "...as usual trying to drink myself [Sasha Jansen] to death." To drown herself in alcohol and sleeping pills is a necessity. The anguish, the insatiable desire for insouciance and the despair coupled with the Parisian lifestyle has wreaked havoc on my soul. #GoodMorningMidnight#JeanRhys
