The difference between my 4 miles run on Sunday and today was literally SELF-TALK. The first 10 minutes I was struggling, dragging my through the windy morning when I tripped and literally almost felt. That’s when I started the self-talk and visualization approach which resulted in 1’12” (or 86.2 %) improvement on pace time and 5’17” on total run time for the same route, time of the day, and same shoes. Positive self-talk in sports has been widely researched, and studies such as “Self-Talk and Sports Performance: a meta analysis” (Antonis H, Nikos Z, Evangelos G, Yiannis T-
Perspectives on Psychological Science 6 (4), 348-356, 2011), or “Assessing the effectiveness of Self-talk Interventions on Endurance Performance”, Ryan H, David S, Michael M - Journal of Applied Sport Psychology 19 (2), 226-239, 2007), shows that this type of intervention is very effective, and results in performance increase in athletes practicing different sports. According to the studies, results varies depending o the task, gender, type of talk (positive or negative), but in the end the balance is always positive. Thus, practicing positive self-talk and visualization not only improve your performance but help you to overcome obstacles and stay motivated towards your goals. You can apply self-talk in every area of your life that needs to be reminded of your potentials, whether at work, school, or sports! -
