*warning* this is going to be a lengthly post, but I hope you all read
This is something that has been on my heart and mind to share for quite a while, but for some reason I've remained quiet for the last almost 7 years. Only my family and close friends know... 7 years ago I was diagnosed with Crohns Disease. The road to my diagnosis was a very scary time peroid for myself and family. Over the course of a couple months, I lost about 50lbs...I was not eating nor drinking anything, including water. My strength was completely gone, I couldn't even hold my baby who was only 5 months old at the time. On September 30th, 2010 I was rushed to the hospital where after a quick CAT Scan, it was revealed that I was bleeding internally. Fast forward, blood tranfusions were started immediately and I was rushed to have a colonoscopy. That is where it was discovered I have Crohns Disease.
I vowed to not let it stop me nor interfer with my life, which is probably why I never wanted to share...I didn't want to have any excuses for life! But yes I have bad days...I'm in the midst of a bad week as I type this. However, I know I've been blessed and there are alot of others who have the disease worse then myself and are in need! It is expensive to have Chrohns Disease...for example my medication is $1,000/month without insurance and my required colonoscopy (every 5 years) cost me $900 out of pocket last year (after insurance) because I have a "pre-existing" condition. Oh and to top it off your insurance company has no problem with changing your prescribtion because they have found a cheaper option for you... who cares if it will actually work for you.
It saddens me that there are so many people out there who are not being properly treated due to money! I've decided to team up with The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of Georgia to try to help those in need and the research of the disease. This is my first of what I hope to be many events to come.
