World War 2 Photos and Facts (@the_ww2_memoirs)

British Paratroopers from the 1st Airborne Division "Red Devils" carry each other towards aid during the 2 hour cease fire allowing the wounded to be evacuated from Arnhem, September, 1944. The 1st Airborne are instantly recognizable by their red berets which can be seen on one soldier in the background of the photo. The "Red Devils" were one of the most revered and elite military units of its era. On the 17th of September thousands of paratroopers from 2 American Airborne Divisions and 1 British exited their aircraft and landed mostly without a hitch. Unlike D-Day they had caught the Germans off guard and encountered little resistance on landing. But they had problems in the opening days and the biggest of these problems was the backup road traffic. German 88s quickly lept into action and further delayed Allied advancements threefold! This allowed the Germans to regroup and get reinforcements, these reinforcements were crack Warden SS troops. Arnhem was one of the most crucial cities that had to be taken since it housed a major bridge but as soon as the 1st Airborne stepped in they encountered lots of resistance and many issues. One of these was communications, as paratroopers spread further and further apart their radios began to malfunction and nobody could communicate with eachother. This could of been avoided had the 1st Airborne listened to the Dutch resistance who warned them that the buildings might interfere. The Battle for Arnhem lasted many days and cost over 3,000 lives with only 500 or so making it out of Arnhem alive. Most were wounded seriously though and would die from their wounds later on. (Colorized by myself and feedback is always appreciated)
