We’ve used the cue “jump” with success with our new and developing weightlifters for years.
When we encourage athletes to “jump” in the snatch and clean & jerk, we’re not actually looking for them to achieve flight (except in certain supplemental exercises). Rather, we use it to characterize the action of creating vertical propulsion in the lifts.
More specifically, we find the word “jump” has been a simple and effective way to communicate how to apply extension forces at the ankles, knees, and hips at the proper time, in the proper sequence and direction, and in the proper ratio needed for successful lifts. The word “jump” cues these actions well, in part, because the biomechanics of the vertical jump are so similar to the biomechanics of the explosion in the Olympic lifts.
