I have been playing around with this wonderful ingredient called Xanthan Gum. It is an amazing natural thickening agent & emulsifier (among other things) and is used from cooking to cosmetics. It really helps make your DIY Dishwashing Liquid & Hand wash thicker, especially when dealing with Castile Soap. * TIP * It can be difficult to mix with water as it will tend to turn into ‘globs’ – in which case a hand blender can help. Another solution which works wonders, is to mix the powder with Glycerine to form a paste then add that to your mixture.
Because the Glycerine/ Xanthan Gum combo works so well it will be a NEW item we will stock at Under Your Sink. As you do not need much it will just be sold in small quantities. I am just finalising the plastic free packaging and I will let you know when its online.
Glycerine soaps I made to give as presents! Yellow part: lemon peel with lemongrass essential oil. White part: eucalyptus essential oil. Green part: mashed kiwi and anise essential oil. They were so cute and smelled amazing!! #soap
This is the Echinacea tincture we made in last week’s Herbal Craft course. We used glycerine to make an alcohol-free tincture. Glycerine is super thick and gloopy so we steeped the echinacea in a little bit of hot water before adding in the glycerine. Whilst glycerine is not as effective as drawing out plant constituents as alcohol it is still a useful ingredient to use for an alcohol-free option. Glycerine also works better with fresh plant materials but we had to use the dried herb as that’s all that is available for echinacea at this time of year. We will leave the tincture to develop for about 5 weeks before straining out the herbs. This tincture is commonly used for colds and influenza. Looking forward to trying in a few weeks
