In a relatively small Clarendon district called Nine Miles grew a young girl named Alecia Bent. She eventually grew up to become me. But before all that, she was the girl who came last in class consecutive semesters, the one who was teased because of her forehead, her teeth and even the very fact that she was absent from school due to lack of funds.⠀
I can't remember a time when I did not want to learn to crochet and it wasn’t even that I grew up with it around me. And so I learnt in 2012, taught to me by my aunt Carol Parchment.⠀
When I got my first job working at a supermarket, my aim was to make money from crochet. I didn't consider it a business, just survival. But even as Ro-Al begin to grow, the patience the process has taught me has also brought insight to the fact that I do this not just for the money but for the love. Even when things get challenging, my desire to create is “bent, but not broken.”⠀
I started off this business completely naïve. There were things that I was instinctively doing to push it that were legitimate branding strategies but there were also some crap too. I often say to whomever will listen “ I think I was crocheting in my past life because I cannot get it out of my system and there are things that come to me instinctively that i can't explain.⠀
And so I went into all that to say this: ⠀
Ro-Al represents creation. Not just the fact that I can turn yarn into a bag, but the fact that despite my circumstances, there was vision through the storm. ⠀
We represent ( and I say ‘we’ because I am speaking my employees into existence) hope for youths to understand that even if you cant afford college you’re not doomed.⠀
We represent authenticity because I do not create things I am not passionate about. I create from a place of love. ⠀
We represent hope for a brighter tomorrow, abundance of ambition, love for positivity, vision for greatness, the ability to express inner beauty.⠀
“Transeamus In Exemplum”, like the motto of my alma mater Edwin Allen High, "We Shall Be An Example." Because I will not stand around and not contribute the the betterment of my generation and the ones to come.
