097 - 099 - Haida North Coast Style inspired skull - various sizes.
.
The stylized ovoids and form lines of the Haida people of the Haida Gwaii off the coast of British Columbia (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) are bold and have always been an influence since I first started seeing their artwork. As you can tell, I really like bold, solid linework.. ha. The rounded, bulging oval-to-rectangular shape called an ovoid is a feature unique to Northwest Coast art. Ovoids are used to portray a creature's eyes and joints, and sometimes teeth or orifices like nostrils and ears. Small faces are often placed within such ovoids; these refer to the loss of the soul as a prelude to death, for the Haida believe that the soul leaks out of the joints or orifices of the body.
.
Inspired by the look of flat designs and the carvings I decided to take that inspiration and translate it into one of my favourite subjects... skulls. Some of the results are these three paintings.
.
Watch a great documentary about the amazing Kwakwaka’wakw artist Chief Beau Dick who sadly passed this year... merging contemporary and traditional art with a bit of badassery... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGjg_abbbLM

IT'S COMING...
.
Have an aunt you don't know what to get for Christmas??? -
- Buy her a painting...
.
Stumped on what to get for Hanukkah? - What about some art?
.
Your Black Mass not complete without something to dress up the sacrificial altar? - Why not a little piece of Canadian history?
.
Have you seen a piece you like? Maybe several? Wondering "When the F@#! is he going to start selling this stuff?" WELL STAY TUNED! Once piece #100 is posted I will begin selling off all of the pieces of The Canada 150 project until all 150 are gone.
.
Start clearing space on your walls and get the cobwebs out of your wallets because all of these babies must go... just in time for the holidays.
Stay tuned for further store launch details...
.
Cheers!
