Ugh. Had second thoughts about posting this, but I'm a bit sick of fakers on social media so here goes... I'm a yoyo dieter. Have been for 15 years. I go up and down, usually between 5 - 10 kilos every year. I've always focussed more on diet than exercise and if I make one mistake or have one blow out then I punish myself for weeks. It's an all or nothing approach. I find myself reading extensively about new studies, diets, exercise regimes etc. and only coming away more confused than ever. These are the reasons I keep going back to square one.
I know I'm not the only one who does this. And the more I read and research the more I know this is totally normal behaviour and may even be primal. Our bodies and brains DON'T want us to lose fat. This is why it is so hard, and why 'weight loss' shouldn't be the end goal.
I want it to be different this time. More balance, and a greater focus on exercising and eating for health rather than weight loss. When it comes to your health, it's something you shouldn't take lightly but it's also so very confusing with all the information thrown at us telling us what we should and should not do. Thankfully, I have two resources (including the wonderful people who have helped me along the way) that break down the confusion and difficulty of living a healthier lifestyle. The fastest way to find out what you want to do in your life is to figure out what you hate. It's like when they say, you don't know what you have until you lose it, well you don't know what you want until you know what you don't want.
When you spend a lot of time doing what you hate, you're actually moving forward in finding what you love.
So look at your life and see what are your pain points, use them as a compass to investigate what you want.
Hate your job? What do you actually hate about it? Is it sitting in from of a computer all day? Is it the routine? Is it the fact that it doesn't challenge you enough?
Use these answers as a guide and figure out what you would change if you could. Every single thing that happens in our life is a great lesson in finding out what we want and don't want.
You need to change your perspective. Remember life is happening not to you but for you. What that means is that every single event that happens in your life has a purpose. It<s up to you to find out what that purpose is.
Once I understood that, everything just seemed to flow better, things didn't seem to affect me as much. It's still a work in progress because after all, we are only human, but the lows are not as deep and I get out of them much faster.
A lot of us don't know what we want but we have a pretty good idea of what we don't want. So start there, make a list of what you don't want and then for each item, make a list of what you would want instead.
Is there something you could change today? In the next week? Start taking small steps in the direction you want to go and soon enough you'll be closer to the life you want to live.
