This is an unfinished sculpture by my late step grandfather Hugo Powell. He was fascinated by the Phoenix and based most of his work around this mythical creature. We have quite a number of his sculptures around the house, and they are all very special. But somehow I find this unfinished one to be one of the most intriguing and appealing. You can see the raw material in its fullest form, and the consideration, love and craftsmanship that has gone into it. By this stage in his life, Hugo was almost blind and deaf, but continued working until the end. He was a remarkable man; a conscientious objector in WW2, he instead joined the Friends Ambulance supporting the Free French Army across several continents. If you have a chance to see his work, it really is beautiful. Some of it was taken in by the Henry Moore Institute upon his death in 2014.
This sculpture sits next to our bifold doors, where the smooth wooden texture connects me with the garden beyond.
