#medalmonday We did it!! So I have been saving you all the boring insta training & running pics because I do that over on @lets_run_fathers but here's the fruit of my labour: My first marathon medal at the beautiful, inspiring & hilly @connemarathon
It was a perfect day, very little wind & cloudy, couldn't have asked for better running conditions.
If anyone I knew in London had told me that I would be contemplating, never mind completing a marathon I would have thought they were out of their minds. I had a very fixed mindset, that I wasn't a runner (the shinsplints and sore knees were my proof) and no amount of arguing would change that. Turns out some times things change. I have been on a path of gradual improvement for a good number of years, huge sweeping changes don't seem to work well for me and I regress almost as quickly but if I take baby steps, one foot in front of the other then, there's progress, often glacial but moving in the right direction.
When we left London (July '15), with my bike in storage and living in temporary accommodation, I knew I needed to keep fit some how, so with a new Apple watch strapped to my wrist and the marketing videos of tanned and glistening Californian's running wearing the same watch I set out to run... Well, I couldn't even run 1km without stopping in the beginning and I came back from runs wondering if I'd burst blood vessels or if my red faced exertion would ever go back to normal.
Within 4 months, I was treating myself to an early morning run to break through the 10Km barrier as a birthday treat for myself!! What a turn around.
Already this year I have clocked up 832km of running, so I would most definitely call myself a runner and now I add marathoner to that. I am the fittest, healthiest, probably lightest (but I rarely step on the scales but I'm wearing 31" jeans today) & possibly happiest that I've ever been.
I have learned that your mind can play tricks on you and probably does many times a day, so be prepared to test it, check it and not assume it's always right. Approach every challenge with a beginner mindset, not that it can't be done but with the right approach and hard work it can be tackled.
Por este nuevo año de vida, por la bendición de la familia por el cariño de mis amigas y amigos, por la SALUD, las alegrías, los kilómetros que he corrido y los que me faltan, le doy GRACIAS a DIOS. ♀️#HappyBirthdayToMe#Running#HappyDay#MorningRun
