FORGIVE AND FORGET- NOT.
Maya, a gentle black and white cow, lives at a farm sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York. Never having had the chance to raise her own babies, she welcomes and nurtures all the new calves who arrived at the sanctuary. When adopted families were found for the group of calves she was mothering, Gene Baur, the sanctuary co-founder and one of the country's foremost advocates for animals, had the job of escorting them away from Maya and off to their new homes. according to Baur, Maya was inconsolable, rolling on her back and wailing. To this day, almost 15 years later, she has not forgiven Gene and will not allow him to come anywhere near her. If he tries to approach her, Maya will charge him. But, the fate of this baby above is completely different, she will not have the opportunity to go to a sanctuary. She will be slaughtered as a baby, for the veal industry at 12 to 16 weeks old.
Few consumers realize that veal is a direct byproduct of the dairy industry. In order for dairy cows to produce milk, they must be impregnated. While female calves are slaughtered or added to the dairy herd, many male calves are taken from their mothers when they are as young as one day old and chained by the neck in tiny stalls to be raised for veal. The confinement is so extreme that they cannot even turn around or lie down comfortably. Many calves are deliberately kept anemic in order to produce light colored meat, which fetches higher prices in restaurants. Their liquid-based, iron deficient diet causes numerous health problems. Motherless and alone, they suffer from ulcers, diarrhea, pneumonia and lameness. After 3 to 18 weeks of this deprivation, they are truck to the slaughterhouse, where their young lives are taken from them.
