LIFE, ANIMATED REVIEW
Tick the boxes: It’s a heartwarming documentary about overcoming mental illness. It’s about growing up and the troubles of learning an independent life. It heavily features a family’s adoration for the magical wonder of #Disney animated movies. Weirdly enough, the poster even features a review quote: “This is everything I want” – Future Sloppy.
There’s a lot to keep secret about this little beauty. Each step of this journey should be discovered first-hand. It follows a young man who is essentially a selfless, warm, caring version of #PeterPan, as he is forced to become an adult. He takes on responsibilities they never believed he could face, and faces the hardships and #heartbreak that comes with independence, work and #love.
The emphasis on Disney #films is the delicious, triple-tiered candy icing. To their surprise, the family began relying on those loveable characters, catchy songs and memorable dialogue to communicate with their boy. He relates every aspect of life to a moment in a Disney #movie, proving the global reach and universal themes those films have. Whether it’s #Mowgli’s lack of connection to his own species, #Simba’s reluctance towards his role of king, or #Bambi learning about being “twitterpated” – for a Disney #fanboy like me, this was a goldmine of emotions.
--- #LifeAnimated does have its drawbacks. At times, it plays out like a live-action #documentary made by Walt himself, which is simply wonderful. This does take away from the realism, as some scenes feel “put on” and forced, taking you out of the personal journey. I also would’ve preferred less repetition on his love for Disney in the second half, as we lose focus on how he’s acclimating to his new life and it starts to feel like an advertisement.
It will make you cry, it will make you appreciate everything you have, and most importantly it will make you revisit The Hunchback of Natre Dame because man that’s a terrific underrated gem. And is it wrong of me to say autistic romance is the most adorable damn thing I’ve ever seen? I must’ve looked like a victim of #Joker’s laughing gas during their cookie baking date.
