My atlas joint article is finally FINISHED. A ton of work.
Learn how to assess the much neglected ATLANTO-OCCIPITAL JOINT, and why it is extremely important to do so. The A-O joint is often misaligned in patients whose cervical stability has been compromised for many years, such as with whiplash patients.
Also learn why most atlas 'corrections' don't stick, and what you can do about it (hint: it has to do with our HABITS!).
It is my impression that current measuring protocols for the atlas joints are very poor, and not accurate. As far as I know, there is no current protocol for measuring A-O torsions. This may lead many to miss out on serious misalignments that are essential to catch up on, and address. -
There's much talk about the atlantoaxial junction, and it is true that this junction is often dysfunctional. However, a torsion at the atlanto-occipital junction is much more serious, as this joint should have minimal movement with regards to rotation and sagittal gliding. Iatrogenic occurrences may present themselves if the A-O is neglected.
Because the C1 may compress the neurovascular bundle emerging from the jugular foramen, hypoglossal and carotid canals when it's greatly misaligned, and because it must lie in proper position in order to hold the foramen magnum in proper position, it is absolutely paramount to be aware of its positional status.
It took me many, many hours to write this article. I hope you like it.
