I’ve got to be honest here. Being a parent is not what I thought it would be. I knew there would be ups and downs (and not much sleep) but there was nothing to prepare me for the incredible, relentless emotional rollercoaster that would ensue. It’s less common these days, but my mind gets so burnt out from the sheer volume of emotions and thoughts I process on the daily (the good and the bad). The responsibility of creating the best human I can is exhausting! The first few months of my son’s life felt like I was in problem-solving overdrive mode the whole time. There was no rest, as even when I rested my mind was subconsciously on my baby – when will he wake next? When did he feed last? What boob do I feed from first? Is he drinking enough? Does he get enough cuddles? Too much? Am I creating a bad habit? Thankfully my mind has adjusted to my new role over time, and a lot of that has had to do with the ‘letting go’ of expectations and following my son’s lead. But gosh, what a ride. It’s not what I thought it’d be, but for every negative, there is an equal positive that I didn’t expect either. It’s so hard, but so, so good.
