You don't have to track macros to make progress. There, I said it! Now before everybody goes all WTF, doesn't he preach this religiously, hear me out and take some notes!

There are specific tiers that I would recommend on an individual basis, based on that person's perceived goals, experience and understanding. I'll try to cover each one thoroughly; please tag a friend that may find this useful if you can.

Tier 1: Tracking calories only. Best suited for total beginners with minimal understanding/experience of nutrition. A great starting point you could say, one that I would highly recommend to the weekend warrior just looking to make some positive changes. This facilitates nothing other than portion control (rather than choosing specific foods for their macronutrient value).

Tier 2: Calories + Protein Target. Best suited towards the general enthusiast who could be described as "likes to lift but also likes burgers and pizza". Suitable for those that are concious of making some solid progress but are happy to prioritize socializing and flexibility or in other words, for lifting lifestylers.

Tier 3: Tracking Macros (by default, tracking Calories). Suitable for those who really like structure and perceive their progress as rather high on their list of priorities. Have no issue turning away certain foods that "don't fit" and are happy to weigh everything, track everything and/or consume food in a repetitive manner (meal preppers this is you). Best described as the serious soldier.

Each tier has its pros and cons. But they all provide positive progression. Choose what suits you best and run with it (insert cardi-no joke here).
