#TheTakeover: DAY 12 - Who was the 1st African-American to attend @northwesternu? We found out when we visited Kevin Leonard and Charla Wilson at the university archives. They've been key counselors to our documentary film on the 1968 Bursar Office Takeover, providing a wealth of photos, newspaper clippings and audio. This day was just about the interviews. We'll be back with the DJI gimble to shoot broll in the office.
#TheTakeover: DAY 11 - We're back at the Black house at #NorthwesternUniversity shooting our documentary on the 1968 Bursar Office protest. We spoke with 2 brave women who both participated in protests on @northwesternu's campus. Dr. Debra Hill, class of 1971 and THE charter member of the #AlphaKappaAlpha sorority at NU. Then Natalie Frazier, class of 2016 and author of "My Four Years At Northwestern".
#TheTakeover: DAY 09 - Guess who's back?! Your favorite Chicago film crew @digife is conducting another round of interviews for our latest documentary project #TheTakeover. To recap, our film is about the black experience on the #NorthwesternUniversity campus, and the ripple effects of the 1968 Bursar Office protest. NU librarian Kathleen Bethel had strong words about the lack of exposure black women had in protest movements of the past and present. We then received a tour of the actual building where The Takeover took place. Tomorrow we shoot at the #NorthwesternUniversity Black House.
#TheTakeover: DAY 08 - Would you download this mixtape? Ha. We made it back! The hotel life for a week is cool, but we're a ready to sleep in our own beds. While Sr. Account Manager @bee_aye jetted home early to get preparations for a new @digife project started, Eric and I got on the road for 12 hours of podcasts, questionable gas station bathrooms and coffee. Our chariot? The Dodge Caravan did alright. Those automatic doors really helped when that hawk was out.
For those that followed us for these last few days, 1.) Thank you! 2.) Keep checking for us as we continue working on this documentary. This road trip was just the beginning of our process. We have more interviews to conduct, more events to shoot, and a TON of footage to go through. And we'll be showcasing our process through this Instagram page.
#TheTakeover: DAY 07 - A full week on the road shooting for our latest documentary project The Takeover. Our final interview on the east coast took us to Montclair, NJ. Acclaimed jazz musician Steve Colson is a #NorthwesternUniversity alum who also risked his status as a student by participating in the Takeover of the Bursar Office in 1968. The people and personalities we've met in just the last week have been incredible. Can't wait to showcase what we've captured. Tomorrow, we head back to the @digife office to load and back up this footage over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over &
over & over & over & over & over & over
#TheTakeover: DAY 05 - If you take care of the gear, it will take care of you. What we use to tell our stories is packed tight in the back of this Dodge Caravan (Eric would appreciate a compliment on his packing skills in the comment section). We made a trip to Target to pick up an AC car adapter so we could plug our laptops in. Eric has been going over the footage, constantly talking about how we can improve the composition of the next interview. Brittany pulled up her 90s R&B playlist as we hit I-95. Next stop: New York.
#TheTakeover: DAY 04 - Guess who's back? Now joining the road trip is our very own @bee_aye. And she arrived just in time as we interview model, actress, seamstress (who knew?) and #NorthwesternUniversity alum Daphne Maxwell-Reid (Fresh Prince's Aunt Vivian Banks). She was the 1st Black Homecoming Queen at NU, and we got to hear the full story straight from her. The interview looked great thanks to the director/DP @ericdseals. Lucky for @digife, he's a big time camera nerd. Later we met in the hotel lobby to organize the game plan for our next destination: New York.
#TheTakeover Tour: DAY 03 - Back on the road with a lot less snow. In between battling trucks going 60 mph on inclines, we pulled over to shoot some bird's eye drone footage of our Dodge Caravan. Eric sat in the passenger seat and had the drone follow us down some country roads. Once we hit Richmond Virginia we pulled out the drone again at the famous Church Hill Lookout point for some amazing shots of the downtown skyline (can you find the drone?). Tomorrow we'll talk with actress, model and #NorthwesternUniversity alum Daphne Maxwell Reid.
#TheTakeover Tour: DAY 02 - Welcome to Asheville, NC, the 1st stop on our tour of interviews for our latest documentary project. Our drone just got back from injured reserve, so we did a quick test in the hotel parking lot before heading to breakfast at (you guessed it) Cracker Barrel. Now full of coffee and syrup, we arrived at James & Sharon Pitts' home to setup for the interview. Afterwards Eric came up with a great idea of having them reminisce over some old pictures from their days in Evanston. No matter what we shoot, the day always ends with us copying footage to a hard drive.
