We got a post card from @joemilham's mom yesterday (she sends us post cards from everywhere she goes. Even mini weekend trips. And yes even Hawaii trips even though they frequently go because they have a condo there lol. I love it though!) and the post card was an image of one of my favorite places we visited while we were on the Big Island! Honaunau, the City of Refuge.
If you had broken kapu the punishment was most likely death, but if you could escape and make it to the City of Refuge then you couldn't be physically harmed and your crimes would be absolved by a priest and you were free to go after. This place was really awesome. The history here was so intriguing and there was lots of cool things to see and read about. Joe's dad knows a lot about the history here so he narrated a lot & told us tons of things you would not find in the museum brochures (pretty much everywhere we went he knew it all, even just stuff near the condo lol, it was awesome). It's also incredibly beautiful here.
I really love Hawaiian history & culture. I know America is a melting pot and we have so many amazing cultures here, but to me it really is so cool how much there is to learn about just in Hawaii, a favorite vacation spot within our own country. It's more than beautiful beaches and fruity drinks...get to know the history & the people! We can't wait to be back in December and hopefully explore other islands soon. Have debated on making a blog post about our time there before (we saw a lot!) but might wanna wait until we go back & add those adventures in as well. Decisions.
