(Dir. Arshad Khan, 2017, Canada, 80 min, English/Urdu/Punjabi/Hindi with English subtitles)
An intimate visual memoir about the complex dynamic the filmmaker has with his father, who was at once extremely modern and also rigidly traditional and unaccepting of his son's true self. Director Arshad Khan explores the intersection of being gay and being an immigrant, as he weaves a dizzyingly hypnotic tapestry of personal and familial acceptance by employing home video, animation, and Bollywood films to express his path to self-discovery.
(Dir: Baxter Stapleton, 2018, USA, 3 min)
A gay black man has a religious experience, featuring vocal by Jussie Smollett (Empire). #outfest#outfestfusion#lgbt#lgbtq#qpoc#queer#poc#filmmaking#film#filmmaker#filmmakerlife
A lot of people assume when I tell them I’m trans, that I’ve had plenty of surgeries and reworked my voice. I wish this was isolated to the cis-gendered community, but the trans community is equally as guilty.
The fact is that my trans experience is anything but binary. I was born intersex, meaning whilst I have the one male physicality, for the most part my body developed in a pretty female binary. Breast development and curves, Moon cycles sans the scarlet waves etc etc. Most people are stunned to know that I have had no cosmetic procedures and actually have only been on hormones for 2 out of the almost ten years I’ve been in transition. Currently I’m not on hormones, in fact I haven’t been consistently on them ever, so I can’t even say hormones have played much of a role in my transition. When posed with the question why, I simply reply, ‘inaccessibility.’ So the next common comment is, your health care though, right? Wrong, the answer to that is that the system is not at all what it seems and the trans health authority in Canada is actually a mess and is not sustainably set up an only prioritizes their patients through ‘access’ aka privilege
