Here lies Bill Schwartz, a backup corner infielder for the 1904 Cleveland Naps. The team name didn’t come from the sleepiness of the team, incidentally. The team star was Napoleon “Nap” Lajoie, so Cleveland adopted his nickname as their own.
Schwartz, a Cleveland native, had an impressive semi-pro career as a teenager and apparently attracted the interest of a couple MLB teams at least. Since he was under 21, his father signed his contract with hometown Cleveland rather than sending his son off to play in Pittsburgh. Schwartz was a good middle infielder, but with the Naps he mostly played first base. While his fielding was said to be quite graceful, he never got his bat going. In 20 games, Schwartz batted just .151 with 13 hits in 24 games, 2 doubles, 5 runs scored and 4 stolen bases. To be fair, he made his debut just 10 days after his 20th birthday and was the fourth-youngest player in MLB. He lost his job when the Indians added George Stovall to the roster, and Schwartz returned to play with his semi-pro team in Akron.
Schwartz played in the minors until 1915. It took a few seasons for his offense to improve, but he eventually became a good hitter, batting .301 for Akron in 1908. He was sent to Nashville in 1910 and played for the Volunteers for 6 seasons. He retired with a .275 average and 935 base hits.
Schwartz spent most of the rest of his life in Nashville, according to his SABR bio. He spent many years working at Vanderbilt University and won 155 games as head coach of the baseball team.
Bill Schwartz suffered a fatal heart attack while taking a walk near Centennial Park on August 29, 1961. He was 77 years old.
