Sooo a video featuring a distraction and how I dealt with it was requested so here’s a video of us revisiting our “forward” task (we still have some work to do!) while Jasmine guides to the door.
Of course she’s not perfect, so when the guy calls her over and sticks his hands in her face, she does slow down to accept the pets although thankfully keeps walking.
Even though this happens a lot and every handler deals with distractions and interactions like this, it still was incredibly rude to call over and purposely distract a tasking dog. Especially since she was so obviously guiding.
It’s also surprising to get this on camera, so much shit happens behind the scenes that I don’t talk about and such around life with a service dog, and it’s important for handlers to showcase how ignorant the general public can be when it comes to service dogs and all the stress that surrounds being a handler. I can only hope the guy heard me respond and won’t distract the next service dog he sees
Jasmine the shepherd mix stands beside me. When given the cue, she pulls forward in harness as I hold onto the guide handle. The camera pans to show two men walking down the hallway towards us. Jasmine glances up for a split second before continuing her pace. A few seconds later, she seems to slow down and her head turns out of frame, this is when the man distracts and pets her. She quickly redirects and continues to head for the door. ———
“Okay, go forward.” *gear clanking, whirring of an automatic door opening in the distance* “Go forward. Good girl.” “Hey baby!” “Leave it.” “Hi.” “Please don’t pet her, she’s working.” *gear clanking some more* “Good girl.” *whirring of an automatic door opening*

I wanted to introduce ourselves a little bit! We’re the owners behind The Atomic Hound!
Well, technically it’s just me (I’m Megann) but my golden retriever puppy Ollie (who just turned 6 months) does pose for pictures and you’ll see him show up periodically on the feed
I started The Atomic Hound for a few reasons!
1. I really like connecting with people and all the custom work I do allows me to meet people!
2. I wanted to be able to give back to the chronic illness community I have Chronic Lyme Disease and have experienced the trials that come with having a chronic illness. I also am training Ollie to be my SD and enjoy connecting with and giving back to the service dog community.
3. I’m a creative and entrepreneurial person and this is a fun way for me to use some of my skills.
If you have any questions about me or us feel free to comment or DM me! I’m always open to talking!
