Top 5 Tips to survive your first year in the classroom
Number 1: Prepare and keep up with your marking
Preparation is key to a good lesson and a key tip to survive your first year. Make sure you know how the lesson will progress whilst keeping room for spontaneity and discussion. The best lessons are not over prepared. They have a natural flow that allows the chance for the students to engage. In keeping with being prepared, do not let your marking fall behind and make sure anything that needs reporting to other staff members of the school is reported in line with policy.
Number 2: Youโ€™re not the first new teacher and you wonโ€™t be the last
Every teacher working in your school has had to start from the beginning. Do not be afraid to ask for help if you are having any difficulties. Experienced teachers and senior leaders will be there to help you, providing you with the insight and experience you need. -
Number 3: Keep it clear
You will need to set boundaries and have rules that align with school policies. You will have your own principles and you should keep them. They are important and they will be respected the longer you stay at that school. Your style and rules will differ to other staff members so make sure they understand the way you run your classroom.
Number 4: Donโ€™tโ€™ forget why you came into it in the first place
Most teachers donโ€™t enter the profession for the money or the term breaks. They come in because they are passionate about helping young people learn, from primary through to secondary and beyond and they are passionate about the subject they teach. -
And finallyโ€ฆNumber 5: Keep a work life balance
Youโ€™ll be keen to show how willing you are to help out. This is great and working in extracurricular activities and helping at school functions will demonstrate that you are a committed member of the team. However, remember to strike a good work life balance. Weโ€™ve all heard of teacher burnout so make sure you still get plenty of rest, keep up on the vitamin C and give yourself a moment away from the classroom.

Eva ๐ŸŒฟ (@missaretas)

I thought I would do one of these. My name is Eva, Iโ€™m 22 years old, and I live in Adelaide, South Australia. I am currently in my third year of studying Early Childhood Education. My next placement is in May in a junior primary setting (R-2). When I finish studying, Iโ€™d love to get a job in either kindergarten or junior primary. ๐Ÿ˜Œโœจ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽจ

Today was the first day back to normality within the classroom ๐Ÿ’™ despite the disarray of our daily timetable, spending time at the beach for swimming lessons was wonderfully amazing ๐Ÿฌ we had many visitors including cuttlefish, dolphins and a seal throughout the two weeks ๐ŸŒ€but I am truly most grateful for with how the kids behaved and represented the school...they were a dream ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Sโ€ขUโ€ขCโ€ขEโ€ขSโ€ขS -- Feel like I got my #teacherlife together this weekend and belong in this IG community. ๐Ÿ˜‰.
Got my first Letter Board (with a pink background ๐Ÿ’ฏ), my first Rae Dunn mug ("blessed" - even better), and had to resort to ordering a Merge Cube for my classroom that'll be here on Wednesday!!.
I spent Thursday and Friday last week at the #Innovate18 conference at Nike World Headquarters (so cool ๐Ÿค“) and I am feeling inspired. Our guiding words were "be the curious, be the courageous, and be the change maker (<-- that's our job people!!). All in all, good weekend. I'm looking forward to wrapping some stuff up this week before we have spring break next week! Happy Monday, folks. Teach on! โ˜บ๏ธ.
