Progress on the mast step .... Day 3 .... this is why boats are never finished .... and the rat😂 ... my mortises require more practice.

Bending in inwales to support the framing for a small deck. Always feel like a boatbuilder when I’m working with steam.

Thwarts and sole boards in. The mast has its sheave holes and nipples, as does the sprit. #snekkersten #smakkejolle #woodenboat #oak #bba #thwarts #spritsail #oneweektogo

Somebody on Instagram said you can’t go wrong with a little chamfer .... so I pulled out the router and now we have a little chamfer.

Strakes cut to length and width for the floor. They will be sanded to a pleasant appearance and shape, sealed with epoxy, and painted.

Floor braces going in. Opted for thickened epoxy and no screws. I'll add fillets to lock them in tight. I still need to make the planks that will be the floor.

First coat of paint, and sanded .... "Painter's White". Originally thought I'd go with exterior enamel, but I did some reading on this and the research says that 100% acrylic latex, over epoxy, is the way to go .... there is some bad chemistry involved in the combination of epoxy and enamel unless you let the epoxy cure for, say, three months. Side note: I used exterior enamel in my bathrooms 15 years ago and we've had zero mold.

When out to visit the boat .... three coats of epoxy .... the bottom is done. Time to paint, roll her over again, and finish the inside.

Starting the day with one of the less glamorous boat building shots .... removing amine blush - a waxy film that rises to the surface of epoxy - with warm water and a 3M pad.

Second cover coat of epoxy .... looks pretty good with some of that afternoon, California, second-summer sun highlighting the wood. One more coat and then paint.

Rare Monday night boat work .... sanding and a first cover coat of epoxy to seal the plywood before painting. In retrospect, I should have done this sooner. I started this project two years ago this week and the plywood has already started to check.

Progress .... glassed the skeg. Light sanding and added a two thin fill coats. Hoping that patience will prevent runs in the epoxy.

So far this looks like it's turning out well. (The white on the left is 5200 that was used on the posts for the trunk.) Another hour and I'll add a fill coat.

Something like that .... careful measurements and cuts and trimming .... is it possible to sand the inside of the slot enough?

Scott Corner (@scotttccorner)

Filled the bolt holes and did my best to fare the inside of the daggerboard slot with thickened epoxy. Lots of sanding on the inside of the slot to smooth it out before glassing it. A few spots need more filling before glassing, especially around the bolt holes. More sanding ....
