A lot of people say that quinoa is rich in protein. But, the truth is that it contains just as much protein as grains like Bulgur wheat, rolled oats, and spelt. It only has slightly higher protein than rice and millet. Kamut grain and amaranth actually have much more protein than quinoa.
The one thing that quinoa has going for it is the fact that it is a source of complete protein. Basically it contains all the essential amino acids we need to stay healthy. And just incase you're wondering, essential amino acids are those that our bodies can't make by themselves. They need to be obtained from the food we eat.
I still love quinoa, so I'm not knocking it all. I'm just saying it's protein content is very very overrated. Anyway....my dinner today is this 'full to the brim bowl' of red quinoa and a lentil and stew/curry. I topped it with a dash of coconut cream and lots of fresh parsley . Needless to say, this meal is #proteinrich
Are you still conscious about your protein intake or have you given up on the hype?
I'm not hung up on protein anymore, I just ensure I get in at least 3 servings of protein rich foods (mainly legumes, occasionally tofu) per day #veganbysomi
CHICKPEA BAKE • Today’s late lunch is a one tray bake - as our dishwasher has broken so I’m trying to minimise washing up! 4 carrots, a medium sized beetroot, head of broccoli & a red pepper chopped up & mixed with a drained tin of chickpeas & a handful of baby tomatoes. For seasoning, chilli flakes to taste, garlic, olive oil, oregano, lots of smoked paprika & S&P. Mix together & roast until carrots are cooked through. The most incredible Berry Vanilla Protein shake this am. . 1/2 c or handful of frozen mixed berrys + 1 c almond- coconut milk blend, 1/2 banana + 1 scoop vanilla vegan protein powder + 1 tbs chia + handful of raw unsweetened coconut chips
