Various - We Out Here (2018, Brownswood Recordings)
A work friend asked me the other day what I thought the future of rock music was. I answered honestly - at this moment in time I can’t see a future for it. Yes, wonderful things are still happening, but it’s all an homage to what went before. “Oh,” said the friend. “Aren’t you sad about that?” I answered no, because jazz is in one hell of a revolution.
Which brings me to this, a compilation of London jazz bands, very much of today, recording exclusive songs in the Brownswood basement over a three day period. And it’s like nothing else I’ve heard. In much the same way as the stellar work of The Comet Is Coming is unlike anything else. This is such an exciting time for jazz and I have a feeling that this comp may, in years to come, be seen as a milestone in the document of jazz. It’s far removed from your classics on Blue Note and Columbia, but Christ, it’s not like their going anywhere. Get on board.
