It started with a stainless steel bento box we fell in love with over a year ago. Identifying the manufacturer took time and then confirming a meeting with Yasuo Aizawa san, 5th generation president of Kobo Aizawa, took 7 months. The company showroom (pics 1-5) is a veritable Aladdin's cave of steel, copper and wood tableware and kitchenware. The meeting, like many others, focused heavily on our and their business philosophies. Choosing the right business partners in Japan is very important and the process takes as long as it needs. Look out for updates on these products in 2018.

In pic 6 is Teruhiso Adachi, 11th generation craftsman of Adachishigehisa Syouten. He is the only person making the company's cypress, cedar and bamboo products by hand. A recent Japanese TV feature on him has resulted in over 2,000 orders to fulfill. Even while overwhelmed with requests, he took time to explain his techniques and products, and even prepared a special gift for us, while making their signature 'wappa' from hinoki cypress, stitched with cherry tree bark and using bamboo pegs. This means that you just add cooked rice with toppings of choice and microwave the dish, ensuring it is infused with a subtle wood aroma. His mother is the institutional memory of the company and showed us various innovations from the different generations.

It was the last day of our Tsubamesanjo factory visits and none of the successes of the week would have been possible without our guide, interpretor and translator extraordinaire, Yasushi Kawakami san (pic 10). Arigatou gozaimasu! Next stop, bright lights and big city: Tokyo.

Part 2 of our day was spent at Suwada, which manufactures Japanese style nailclippers and bonsai tools. Last year we took some samples to Cape Town to get customer feedback and they were snatched up, so this time we met with Tatsuki Mizunuma san to discuss future orders. What makes Suwada's factory unique is that all the machines have been painted black to match the company branding. Its staff complement is young and staff members make amazing metal sculptures from the steel mould cut-offs, like the bonsai and lion pictured. There was even a 1955 model nailclipper on the production line, sent in for maintenance, being carefully sharpened among the new tools. #wazashop #wazainjapan2018 #waza #suwada #sanjo #bonsaitools #bonsai #manicure #pedicure #japanesetools #japanesesteel #nailclippers #openfactory #wherewameetsza
