The „Arctic Storm“ revived - Every time I go to a place, storms seem to follow me. Last time I was on Lofoten, I experienced intense cold air storms and the amazing cloud structure they often reveal, this time the storms showed some amazing updrafts and stayed over the open ocean. This was the last morning of this trip and it was a well-deserved goodbye.

The only time we saw the sun during the last 10 days was this crazy sunrise around the village of „å“, all the way in the south of Lofoten. This sunrise gave us almost 30 minutes of light, and also marked the last time this place would see the sun this year. It was sure as hell amazing!

I just arrived home from an exciting trip, where we experienced the arctic night, the northern lights and the harshest weather conditions the North had for us. Special thanks goes to @eliassenrorbuer and @solsidenbrygge to host us and make this trip possible, you guys rock! Also, I finally met my friend @stevenhenriksen again - together with his guest @ebruzeren we had a fun time chasing the Northern Lights and looking for new locations. My friend @nicolasalexanderotto deserves a special thanks as well - simply for dealing with me for such a long time. Lol. Lets hope we can repeat this soon!

Our last morning on the amazing Lofoten archipelago passed with a crazy display of storms, some of which the tops started burning in the light of the sun that doesn‘t cross the horizon anymore these days. This one in particular aligned nicely with the crescent moon while the highest cirrus clouds already burned, which gave us a nice mix in between sunrise and blue hour. Tonight we will travel back to the airport and leave to Germany, it has been an amazing trip.

When I‘m in the Arctic I always enjoy taking long exposure shots of landscapes together with the fast moving and quickly changing weather conditions. While blue hour was transitioning into sunrise, the scenic mountains at Haukland Beach were already pink due to indirect sunlight reflecting on their top parts. We found some cliffs, that- at low tide, are exposed and looked for some nice foregrounds in order to catch the good light. How do you like long exposures? I have quite some more, let me know, what you think!

The typical red huts are a sight that you will have in many of the coastal towns and villages of Lofoten. This is Nusfjord, where we scouted for @nicolasalexanderotto s upcoming workshop in February (make sure to check that out!). I did a long exposure using both - the Haida big stopper and the Formatt Hitech 0.9 soft edge gradient, to get smooth clouds and soft water textures. Do you like these kind of shots? I have many more and hopefully I will also take some more during the last 2 days of this trip.

Yesterday night we went to Vik beach, right next to the „classic“ Lofoten spot Haukland. There was no aurora expected but it came in anyway. I can‘t tell you how it felt to see the green lady again! The best part - it was just a 20 minute drive from our @solsidenbrygge hotel in Ballstad, that we are currently collaborating with! We are currently still hoping for the sky to clear since auroras are expected to be strong tonight, so wish us good luck

As I post this, we can just see auroras from our @solsidenbrygge Rorbuer and we are off to go shooting very soon. This is an old shot from my last trip to Lofoten but lets hope I can get some amazing shots tonight! Make sure to check out my story as well as @nicolasalexanderotto ‘s and the Solsiden Brygge story where we will take you along the next days!

One of the good things at traveling with @nicolasalexanderotto is, that he’s an absolute pro in getting the best out of a raw file! This is a long exposure shot of our amazing @eliassenrorbuer cabin with the last light of the setting sun. It was the last day this village experienced direct sunlight for about a month, so from tomorrow on, there will be no more sun for us!

I rarely post phone pictures, but Lofoten are so epic that even an iPhone shot can be epic. This was in 100+ kph gusts at some seastacks close to Vikten. We struggled with the insane winds but got some decent compositions anyway!

Today we used the 1 hour of daylight that was still left for shooting the scenic, if not the most awe inspiring, location on Lofoten - Hamnøy, the oldest fishing town of the archipelago. The best part - from our amazing hotel, the @eliassenrorbuer cabins that make up a large chunk of the village with the typical red huts, we literally reached this spot in five minutes by walk, an amazing tweak for us in the insane windy conditions today. Lofoten can be rough, but if you are in the right place, you can be one step ahead of the weather and use every chance you get!

We are currently on our way to Lofoten, since our @flysas plane was cancelled (for whatever reason) we are now hoping to still make it up there today. Anyway we are going to lose some valuable hours, but lets hope for the best. This shot comes from Scotland, where I definitely need to go again soon, and shows the moment, the shower finally went by to make space for an epic sunset-rainbow.

The fishermen just went to sleep on their boat as the storms exploded into distant fireworks, some 1-200km away. In this moment I was glad to have my 200mm lens with me that I kept shooting with for hours, until the distant lightning got overshadowed by a close, loud rumbling fresh storm. What else?

I hope you guys are in the mood for magic landscapes and beautiful auroras. On Wednesday I‘ll leave to Lofoten again with my friend @nicolasalexanderotto and we are going to explore the arctic night, the eternal darkness that shades over the most Northern parts of the globe in winter. I can‘t wait to see this incredible phenomenon again.

Triplets striking into Maracaibo Lake. I bet swimming there is probably not a good idea, maybe you will get toasted at one point 😂 It‘s an epic experience, to say at least.. Venezuelas lightning capital of the world!

Towers of water rise in the air like the plume of an atomic explosion. They turn so electric that you could power the whole of South America with a single storm in Catatumbo. Unfortunately we don‘t know (yet) how to harvest this massive amount of energy, but lets see what the future brings...

Haven‘t posted too much Venezuela madness recently. It‘s time that I go to Catatumbo again, but I‘m sure my friend @alanhighton and me are gonna set something up for 2018! You better be prepared! 😏😜

If you tilt your view of the last shot to the left, this is what you would see. The sheer madness of this storm was pretty obvious at that point. We made it in front once more but then we got trapped and found shelter under the roof of a nearby gas station. Even there we could still measure winds exceeding hurricane strength but at least we were safe from the big hail that was raining down and sounding like an orchestra full of drums.

The Lightning & Landscape Dude (@jonaspiontek)

One of the most powerful and most beautifully structured Supercells I have intercepted in Germany. It was a total mess to get out once it swallowed us and damages of hurricane winds and large hail are probably still visible today. This HP monster was rotating so deep and so fast, that at one point all the storms started circling around it as it formed something that looked like a meso-low. An incredible experience, to say at least.

Still my favorite storm scene. Maybe also the favorite of my fellow chasers that were experiencing this incredible sunrise storm with me. Something so beautiful, the raw force of nature, that makes the windmills look tiny. The Storm of Kinderdijk..
