Free Content • Interview With Chris McLennan

Interview by Tiffany Reed Briley

Hey Chris! It’s so nice to meet you! To get us started, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in the south island of New Zealand and I have been working as a full time travel photographer for 28 years. My work sees me shooting everything from landscapes to cultures and wildlife. I also photograph adventure sports in a variety of locations around the globe. In addition, I host photo tours in the South Island for photographers.

Where was the last place you photographed?

The last place I photographed was the Noosa Festival of Surfing in Australia for Tourism Queensland. This was an amazing event featuring all types of surfing including tandem acrobatics and dog surfing.

What was the last image you printed?

The last images I printed at BayPhoto were large aluminium landscape prints which are displayed in a store in Vail, Colorado. They ranged from 20x28 to 30x40 inches in size.

What’s your next goal for your photographic journey?

My goal for my photographic journey is to continue to evolve my work and share my passion with others. I will also be expanding my use of drones to create new angles and mix up the way we look at things.

What inspires you to photograph?

I am constantly inspired by the world around us and all of its treasures. I love being able to capture the world through my own eyes and to share this with others. I believe…

Article by Tommaso Di Donato

Panoramic pictures of landscapes and city scenes are very effective, but can be difficult to produce. Here Tommaso Di Donato shares some advice by showing us how he produced a beautiful panorama of the city square in Bologna

Night urban photography is something I really love. The city looks completely different from what we can see during the day. Add to this that my home town is an ancient medieval city and you can easily imagine the kind of light games you can catch during the night on the old stone walls of the buildings!

Imagine the reflections on the paved roads that are thousands of years old, worn-out by horse-drawn carriages.

Night urban photography can be very challenging. Since my move to Sony cameras, dynamic range is not a big problem anymore. But shooting a medieval town during the night is a nightmare, even with the best available camera sensor.

To add a bit of thrill and excitement, I decided to opt for a panoramic picture of the central square of my town. Bologna is gorgeous and renowned for having the most ancient university in the world. You can imagine how many students walk around every night, enjoying the great nightlife – students spend hours having a great time hanging around in the streets and squares.

So, summing it all up, today I will explain my technique on long exposure-HDR-panorama imagery. Nice challenge, don’t you think?

Article by Piotr Wyrzykowski

Apparently, the Inuit can recognise 60 types of snow. I can recall some of them when clearing the snow off my car, but 60? It’s a tricky argument to talk about all kinds of typologies and diversity. Polish language, complex and extensive as it is, has about six genetic names of fog – English language probably about the same. But every photographer who works during sunrises knows many more. It can be hard to easily name every type of mist, fog or haze, but luckily we are no linguists, we don’t have to call everything we see. We only need to portray it, that’s where it comes down to.

In Warmia at the Northeast Poland the most misty season is the autumn, when thick and broad clouds hang low over the ground. There is fog floating over water surface, shifting around in the mild morning breeze. Mist hidden in basins of hills and vaporising after the first sun rays warm the landscape up. In a deep forest, thin haze stays up in…

Free Content • Interview With Stan Moniz

Interview by Tiffany Reed Briley

What inspired you to pick up a camera for the first time?

The first thing that inspired me to pick up a camera was primary to capture the world that happens within the blink of an eye in a beautiful curling wave. Growing up in Hawaii as a body boarder and surfer my home was in the ocean. At the age of 16 – and because I couldn't afford a DSLR and water housing at the time – I would spend all my allowance on those Fuji waterproof cameras. I would swim out into the waves, get a few shots until I ran out of film and then turned it into the processing center eagerly, awaiting for the next day to see what I captured on film.

What important lessons have you learned as a wave and landscape photographer?

Starting off in the world of surf photography, composition is almost everything. Swimming around in small and larger surf and positioning yourself to get that perfect shot as a flock of seagulls fly overhead isn't easy.

Landscape photography is the same way, although it doesn't take so much physical strain on your body as capturing images in the surf. I go into a landscape shoot with an image in mind.

What is your attraction to the water?

It was a past time growing up in Hawaii, hanging out with family and friends, enjoying each others company at the beach and along the waters edge. Let's just say that it was a hard thing to escape from, even if I wanted to. It certainly was my favorite time of the week!

What is your favorite time of the day or night to shoot and why?

That will always be a hard question to ask. As I mature as a photographer, I keep finding…
