Book review time. Hyperion by Dan Simmons
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope - and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.
This is one of the many books that I picked up only because of my fellow #bookstagrammers. After seeing so many positive reviews, I checked it out. I have mixed reviews about this tale. It is an intriguing storyline, but this entire volume was mostly character development, with each telling their history to their fellow pilgrims. .
I felt the book was sluggish at times, and I had to force myself to continue reading. After this volume, I am hoping for a more smooth-flowing continuation of this series, the Hyperion Cantos.

My daughter @lydiajt and I had plans to go see the new It film when it came out, but I'm working in Houston after Hurricane Harvey and Irma is bearing down on South Florida. So she sent me a pic of herself with the new Georgie filter on Snapchat. Hopefully we can go see It together after all this destruction blows over. #daughtet#stephenkingsit#snapchat#georgedenbrough#pennywise
For my fellow #bookstagrammers in San Antonio, I'm jealous. I did a search of used bookstores, and noticed one in the basement of the San Antonio Public Library. After a decent bookhaul for under $5, I had a conversation with the store manager Andrea and one of the volunteers, Sandra, who is on the board of directors of the library system. I could have spent hours looking in this store, but I showed up 30 minutes before they closed. Anybody in the area has to check this place out, and support the local library at the same time. #bookstagram#library#thebookcellar#usedbooks#hiddentreasures#sanantonio#publiclibrary
