The author who wrote one of my favorite horror novels of all time, Carrion Comfort, just turned my entire literary world on its ear. The Fifth Heart is a cacophony of suspense and humor, containing a veritable Who's Who of late 19th Century American culture.
.
.
The American author Henry James is in Paris, with the intention of committing suicide, when he is stopped by The World's Preeminent Consulting Detective, Sherlock Holmes. Holmes needs his help in solving not one, but two cases, back in America. .
.
At first, I thought having a horror writer like Simmons write a Sherlock Holmes tale would be like having Stephen King write a James Bond novel; a ridiculous proposition. Simmons, however, pulls it off with a great deal of flair. He introduces the reader to Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), future President Theodore Roosevelt (Teedie), as well as some of the most famous persons of that era. This book is a fantastic combination of mystery, as befitting the best of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works, and the kind of s satirical humor Twain was best known for. .
.
It may be a stretch, but I believe that Simmons threw out a quick little homage to Sai King. At one point, Twain is telling Henry James that during the writing of Huckleberry Finn, twain stopped hearing Finn's voice in his head. "...Huck just left me. He lit out for the territory without me." The Talisman, anybody?
.
.
For an incredible read, Dan Simmons is already one of my favorite authors. With The Fifth Heart, he entered another genre and completely won me over. This book cannot be praised enough.

I was contacted a few days ago by the author, and I was offered the opportunity to read and review this book. Mr Roberts stated that some previous readers had issues with the book in the earlier chapters, and that any suggestions by me would be appreciated. .
.
I read this novel, and corresponded with the author during my reading, pointing out some points that may have taken away some of the enjoyment from this very well-crafted tale. Once the reader gets past the initial meeting of the protagonists/antagonists, this story is a full-on assault to your senses.
.
.
This story circles around Sarah, a special forces officer in Indonesia, who is sent to the U.K. to assist a special Interpol team stop NarcoTerrorism, in the form of an Irish drug gang. The story takes you from England to Ireland to Jakarta, with explosive action and an in-depth look at the challenges facing our law enforcement and military against the rise of drugs world wide.
.
.
Roberts did a wonderful job researching the locations and tactics used in this novel. The underlying tale of normal people being tasked to do extraordinary things actually gave me the feels at times. If any readers are interested in this book, I have been notified by the author that edits are being made, and the updated story should be out soon. As for the original I read, I would still highly recommend the read. I would warn any readers to not give up reading due to the first four chapters; you will be glad you continued.

After reading so many new authors this year, I wanted to go back to my roots and read some classic horror. Hope classic is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? This story was initially published on 1820. Now I don't feel so old, haha.
.
.
I'm sure I don't have to give a synopsis of this tale, since it's such a part of American culture. This is one of the classic ghost stories, and it still stands the test of time.

I recently saw @aahoo.e post on IG about her short story, Lucifer In Love. I am a big supporter of new authors (how else are they supposed to become old and venerated authors?), especially those who are active in the #bookstagram community. So I decided to check out this cute little short, and I do mean short, story. On Amazon, it says it is 26 pages long, and it took me a whole 11 minutes to read it. I think that entitles this tale to the #onesentencebookreview treatment. So here goes.
.
.
"This is a cute, heartfelt tale of The Fall of Lucifer, if Lucifer is, in fact, a female.""
.
.
Aahoo showed off her writing talent with this little gem, and now she has me wanting to see her expand her skills to something a little longer. A novella in the near future, perhaps?

A few days ago I was contacted by the author Brett Arquette. He asked if I would be interested in reading and reviewing the first book in his new Hail series. Hmmm. New author and new book? Of course I gladly accepted the challenge.
.
.
The synopsis to this novel seemed promising. A billionaire industrialist, Marshall Hail, lost his wife and twin daughters to a terrorist attack. Hail then uses his company's resources and technology to hunt down and kill terrorists. This book is classified as a techno-thriller, and it definitely lives up to the name. .
.
This novel is set in the near future (early to middle 2030's, as near as I can figure), so some parts of it seemed more science fiction than science, but research I did after reading this story showed that the inventions and technology Arquette writes about are feasible, if not actually in existence now. The writing at the beginning of the story was a little off-putting, but for the sake of fairness, I continued reading, to my benefit. Arquette really hit his groove about a third of the way into the book, and never let go of the throttle. This was an action-packed thrill ride, with twists along the way to keep the reader intrigued throughout. His characters, although stereotypical at times, became more lifelike as the tale progressed, and the ending was a good setup for the next novel in the series, Hail Warning.
.

Thank you to Brett Arquette for giving me the opportunity to discover Marshall Hail and his bag of tricks. I'm looking forward to continuing this series very soon.

Last month I was fortunate enough to meet the incredible author @t.m.frazier and talk books with her. I learned about her best-selling King series, but she recommended I read her novel The Dark Light of Day, which was a prequel to the series. This novella, Dark Needs, is considered a follow-up to TDLOD, but I felt it was more of a bridge, in that it took its readers from Abby and Jake and introduced the character of King. .
.
As I discovered in my first Frazier read, there is again graphic violence and strong sexual content, but there is also a sweet love story involved. Jake is by nobody's definition a Prince Charming, but his love for Abby and her daughter Georgia is so obviously apparent, that you'll find that this walking nightmare becomes a big softie. Frazier has again won me over with her writing and characters, and I'm looking forward to diving into the King series very soon. Hope I see Jake and Abby make an appearance.

It appears I may have under-chellenged myself with my 2018 Goodreads challenge. Less than two weeks in, and I've already finished 11 books. The fun part is that all 11 books are by different authors. My goal this year was not just 50 books, but to try new authors. I could do 50 books just by King and Koontz, but look at the new authors I would be missing out on. Keep up the recommendations, #bookstagrammers! #bookstagram #readingchallenge #newauthors

I just finished reading another selection I received in a recent @the.nocturnal.readers.box subscription. This time it was my autographed copy of We Should Have Left Well Enough Alone. After reading many accolades about Ronald Malfi's work, I had high hopes for this collection of twenty short stories. I did not close the cover disappointed.
.
.
While some of these short tales (most under 15 pages) involve the supernatural, Malfi spends the majority of this book reminding us that some of the worst monsters wear a human guise. Several of these bite-sized nuggets were suggestive of other writers, but for the most part Malfi has created a writing style of his own, hitting the reader square between the eyes with his pace of storytelling. Such short tales do not allow for much character development, but at no time did I feel let down. This book is like a boxer, consistently throwing a punch at you, then landing another before you can recover from the first. The staccato flow of this book was quite fun, and I would really like to find one of his novels to compare writing styles. Any recommendations?

After reading so many recent books on my Kindle, I wanted to get back to my god ole paper and ink novels. Vermilion has been on my TBR since I received it in a @the.nocturnal.readers.box subscription months ago. I'm very happy I got to read this fun tale.

Lou Merriwether is a Chinese/American psychopomp (she deals with ghosts and other undead things) living in 1870's San Francisco. When many Chinese men and boys, supposedly working on a non-existent railroad, go missing, Lou goes to the Wyoming territories to discover the truth. This is a tale of the supernatural, with a healthy dose of the harsh realities of anti-Chinese racism so prevalent in the US during the post-Civil War era. .
.
Molly Tanzer has created a fun, original tale, made more unique by the setting and time frame. Her characters are a joy to learn about, and fun to hang out with without becoming caricatures of the stereotypes. The story is told at a nice even pace, and I could not put this book down. I for one would love to see future novels with more of Lou Merriwether's adventures.

In between all of the other books I have read in the past three weeks, I have been slowly but surely working way through t this collection of world by Arthur Machen.
.
.
Arthur Machen was a Welsh horror writer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His tale "The Great God Pan", originally released in 1894, is considered by many to be the greatest horror story ever written. .
.
Unfortunately, I did not really take to this collection like I had hoped. The style is very formal, understandably, considering the time it was written. The stories themselves, even with the supernatural elements involved, seemed slow and plodding. I may have been spoiled by modern-day horror writers, but this book did not succeed in maintaining my interest, and I could only read one tale at a time before I put it down to read something else. I am glad to say I have read "the greatest horror tale ever written", but I respectfully don't agree. This book may be fine for the antiquarians of horror, but for me, I'll take King, Cutter or Newman.

With the popularity of George Romero movies, The Walking Dead, and any of the many other zombie movies out recently, Steve Morris has shown us the true coming of the Apocalypse. With Lycanthropic, Morris has created a new series, of which Wolf Blood is the first installment, in which the werewolf is the true harbinger of the End Times. .
.
Professor Norman Wiseman has discovered that werewolves do exist, but his warning to the world falls on a disbelieving scientific community. He is discredited, but his students not only believe but eagerly become the creatures. In their human state, they do what they can to create more of their kind. This does not bode well for the rest of humanity, to say the least.
.
.
Morris has created a new series, just released on January 1st, that is spellbinding in its telling. These characters, both antagonists and protagonists, are very well-crafted, and the story itself is a masterpiece, intertwining several smaller storylines into one fantastic tale. The pace of the action is gripping, with a sense of impending doom that will not let the reader put the book down until the end.
.
.
My only regret reading this novel is that I will have to wait so long until the second book, Wolf Moon, is released. Steve Morris has won over a new fan, and I'm sure the rest of the series will continue to leave his mark on the horror genre.

Vampire: a supernatural creature who survives by drinking blood.
Incubus/Succubus: a supernatural creature, once human, who survives by soaking in the sexual energy of their prey.
These two species have been battling for thousands of years, with humans being none the wiser.
Now enter Matthew, an Incubus who was turned into a vampire before his transformation. After being a vampire for seven years, alone and confused, he is captured by Tarrick, an incubus general. Matthew learns that he is of both worlds, and starts to learn how to use all of his enhanced abilities, both incubus and vampire.
.
.
Jex Lane had created a world of fantasy, action and seduction. These characters are skillfully brought to life before our eyes in a unique tale of adventure and discovery. Lane is able to craft a story with a new spin on the vampire genre, and the history of the succubi/incubi is one rarely seen in print. This is the first of three (I think) novels in the Beautiful Creatures saga, and this book definitely will make the reader crave the rest of the trilogy.

Sinner by Christopher Graves
Release Date: April 5, 2018
.
.
Graves introduces is to Zeke, the product of generations of religious zealots who feel it is God's will that they slay those that sinned. In the present, Zeke is labeled in the media as "The Rattlesnake Killer", due to some of the tools he uses to mete out God's justice. Through a series of flashbacks during the course of the tale, the reader discovers what his upbringing was like, and come to empathise, if not root for, Zeke.
.
.
This is Christopher Graves' first novel, and I am impressed with his ability to create characters that you can not only visualize knowing in real life, but also people you can truly root for and hate at the same time. Graves' ability to create storylines with a nice pace, and twists that will keep the readers on their toes, is reminiscent of authors with much more writing experience. I'm expecting great things from Mr Graves in the future, and look forward to reading his next works.

Sins of the Fathers by A.J. McCarthy
.
.
This was another very well-written novel I received from @blackrosewriting. This book is classified as a suspense/thriller, and definitely lives up to the genre. Charlie Butler is the owner of a pub in Montreal, who starts receiving strange letters on the mail (yes, real snail mail). At first, the letters seem harmless, although odd, but then they start getting more worrisome. When Charlie involves a private detective, that's when the action and suspense luck into high gear.
.
.
McCarthy does a wonderful job weaving a tale of suspense, with twists all along the way. The author was able to create a story that will have the reader glued to the book right until the end. This novel does not appear tip be a part of a series, but I could definitely see a group of novels starring Simm, the coarse but likeable private detective. Kudos to A.J. McCarthy for a well-done thriller that does the genre justice.

Keeper of the Watch by Kristen L. Jackson
Release Date: Feb 1, 2018
.
.
I have been honored by @blackrosewriting by being chosen as one of their new release reviewers. My second novel from this publisher is the first in a new series by Kristen L Jackson. Keeper of the Watch is the story of Chase Walker, a young man who discovers that he is destined to be a Keeper, the guardian of a watch that allows him to travels through each of the 12 dimensions of Earth. Chase is joined by Alys, a Keeper from an alternate dimension, whose job it is to guide him along his voyage of discovery.
.
.
This is one of the most original storylines I have come across in quite some time, and Jackson has done a marvelous job creating a universe the reader can very easily fall into.. Her character development is well-crafted, and her pace of story (usually a weakness of newer authors) is quite rapid, but not rushed. Jackson's talent in bringing this story to life is refreshing, and this is one series I'm highly anticipating continuing to its conclusion.

I have followed @alysiahelming_novelist for a while on IG, and was recently honored to be offered the chance to review her novel Protogenesis. After following Helming's travels to Greece for research and meetings about this novel, I expected great things going into this book. I was not disappointed.
.
.
Helena is a 17-year-old girl whose mother was killed in an explosion at her workplace. Or was she? Helena's search for answers leads her to Athens, Greece, where she becomes involved with a godfather she didn't know existed, a Greek underworld crime ring called the Syndicate, and two young men, both vying for her affections. Not to mention certain Greek gods who may be more than what the mythology books led her to believe.
.
.
Young adult is not my genre of choice, but Helming had created so much more than a coming-of-age teen angst story. Take a thriller novel, throw in a little romance, add a pinch of Egyptian and Greek mythologies, and blend well. Alysia Helming has successfully brought the reader into the Greek culture with an original and intriguing tale of the Greek gods, who may still be involved with humanity thousands of years after their tales were told.
.
.
This is the first in a planned series of seven novels. Be prepared: once you read this book, you will be chomping at the bit for the next one, and the one after that. .

I just finished off my second book of 2018. Nine Pines was sent to me by @august.birch.writer as a pdf a little while ago, and I finally made time to get it read.
.
.
Birch is writing a series of books starring Jack Pruitt, a small-town sheriff in Nine Pines, Michigan. This novel is actually an introduction to the community, in the form of several interconnected short stories focusing on a different Nine Pines resident in each one. Based on the people who live within its city limits, Nine Pines is as messed up as much, if not more, than any of my favorite possessed cities (Castle Rock and Derry, ME or Morganville, NC). These residents all have their inner demons, and sometimes the demons come out to play. Based on Birch's ability to develop these characters and create interesting, if not completely original, storylines, I'm looking forward to finding and reading the upcoming Jack Pruitt series.

2018 started the same way 2017 ended; being amazed at the quality of @namwensemaj's writing talent. His sanity, however, cannot be guaranteed. People Are Strange is a collection of 10 short stories, some as short as two pages. These stories range from talking bottle-nose flies to the world's worst Jehovah's Witness impersonators.

.
After reading each of these stories, i did a review of each one. Some of my reviews consisted of one word ( Whoa!, Sick, Funny), but some had longer reviews (Mr Newman, you win, that WAS f***ed up, What a twist, What a twisted author).
