Millions of newborn male chicks are killed every year. In the first 24 hours of their life the male chicks are separated from the female chicks to be ground up alive in a grinder or suffocated to death. Males are deemed worthless in the egg industry.
The females are sent to farms to produce eggs until they either die of exhaustion, organ failure, (produce far more eggs in farms than they would naturally) or their ability to produce eggs declines and they are sent to slaughter. They are killed at approx. 18-24 months old with a natural lifespan of 10 years. Their throats are cut before they are submerged in boiling water to remove their feathers. Some chickens are still conscious and are boiled alive.
Caged & free range hens have the ends of their beaks cut off with a hot blade so they do not peck each other as a result of being frustrated living in poorly conditions. This process is painful and done without painkillers. Some hens die after being ‘beaked’ as it’s too painful to eat and drink.
What can you do to help? Stop buying eggs. Just because society tells us something is acceptable doesn’t mean it is.
On a happier note, you can still bake cookies and cakes without eggs Egg replacements include mashed banana, nut butter, chia or flax seed mixed with water (leave to set for 10 mins to form gel consistency) or unsweetened apple sauce #govegan
