The thanksgiving holiday will forever hold a special place in my heart. It was four years ago from this date that Todd and I were walking through the streets of downtown salt lake city and randomly started talking. I can't believe the timing of is crossing paths and will forever be grateful for the relationship we've formed and the sacrifices he's made to create this business that's thriving for us. I'm so thankful for his love and for the love from all of our incredible couples. Thank you a million times over for believing in us, and thanks to my love for making my dreams of owning my own photography business come true. I'll have to make another post more centered around that.
Hey friends and families! I have time open for portrait sessions before the holiday season and would love to get some more of your friendly faces scheduled. This time of year when the snow sticks to the trees and the tree farms start is my personal favorite. Whether you need holiday pictures or you're skipping the cards and want some magical portraits, either way I would love to work with you. Shoot me a message and tag your friends!
When the groom shows up to the wedding this confident, stylish and decked out in Versace details. I feel like so many photographers and couples overlook taking nice portraits of the groom. Your wedding should equally be about the two of you getting married and celebrating your love together, rather than just one person having a day about them. I always love just how much our couples treat each other as equals at their weddings. Anyway, swipe right to see a couple of my favorites.
They spent the early hours of their wedding day cuddled up in bed and the portraits that came from it were beautiful. Tonight I want to ramble about direction. Most couples we talk to have no idea what to do in front of the camera and you know what? It's completely normal. Most everyone feels that way. But choosing a photographer who has the experience to guide you into the portraits whether they are posed or candid is so important. Having your portraits taken can and should be enjoyable and natural. If you're a couple reading this, I can't encourage you enough to do your research before hiring someone. If you're a newer photographer please learn how to direct so your couples can feel confident in the experience you're giving.
Taking portraits of Mike and Candace honestly felt like being around friends. We first met Mike at a wedding around a year ago and have seen him quite a few times at other weddings since. I was so excited to finally meet Candace and see just how great they were for each other. Everything about them is so sure and calm, I don't quite know how to describe it other than saying it simply just felt right. Anyway, here's one of my favorites of them together. The black and white portraits were some of my favorites.
Spent the evening getting to know these two and their cute furry friend on the Great Salt Lake and I had such a great time. All he wanted to do was play with Leila and Eric and be as close as possible with these two, whether he was between them or running just behind them while we went further onto the lake. I loved every second of it and honestly just wanted to play with him the entire time. So happy they brought the entire family!
A few favorites from an incredible wedding we recently photographed for Andrea & Dean. I spent a few hours that morning with the girls, giving me the time and opportunity to take some more unique detail shots I'm in love with. Everything from her veil and shoes to her jewelry were so photogenic, and the light couldn't have been any better to play with. I'm so grateful for our couples for their constant trust in us and our style. It's been an incredible season.
In beginning to catch up on blogging from this summer and fall and I'm starting with Debbie and Trevor! They had a small yet gorgeous backyard wedding where they joined their two little families together. I'm starting with their wedding because of how emotional the entire evening was. They kept the celebration very focused on their little girls and it was such a selfless day centered around those they love. That's what weddings are all about and I love it.
One of my favorites of Sidney and Matt on their wedding day. You can tell it snowed and rained yet they were so unbelievably happy through it all that it didn't even matter, nothing could get these cuties down. Here's to more perfectly imperfect days ahead, because marrying your sweetheart is all that matters. And to be honest days like this are secretly my favorite anyway.
Being surrounded by gorgeous burnt orange leaves while cozying next to your love is a great time. Liza and Aj have this love for each other that was so much fun to be around. I had the best time as we walked their wedding venue getting to know their story and photographing in pretty corners like this along the way. We haven't even wrapped up our fall work and I'm already looking forward to next year's weddings. If anyone's getting married here's my shameless plug. We are booking 2018 and would really love to work with any and all couples who connect with our work.
While driving through the city after they exchanged vows in Muir Woods it was so touching to see all the affectionate moments that passed between Torrie and Nick. They were either shooting each other smiles and little kisses between lights or constantly holding hands. And here we are inspired watching these two together from the back seat. I'm so thrilled for you two and the love you've found in each other. We really can't thank you enough for letting us be so closely involved in your wedding and having us out to California to be one of the few to celebrate with you.
Did some hiking in the mountains yesterday with a couple of my photographer pals. The weather was gorgeous and we had a few snow flurries with sun which is always special to hike through. To top it off I'm feeling all lucky cause @ryanjohnsonphoto whipped out this beauty and @gabe_mcmullen took this rad behind the scenes portrait of me. Photo: @gabe_mcmullen
Sometimes I get to photograph strangers for my work and I'm always so amazed at how friendly and welcoming people can be about it. Having your portraits taken doesn't have to be an uncomfortable and vulnerable experience, especially if your photographer gives direction before and during the session. I kind of have this goal where I want everyone we photograph to come away from it feeling some sort of level of enjoyment. If I can achieve that then that's success in my mind.
Btw this was taken at @petersenfarmers in front of @borrowedgarage's bus during one of their holiday events. The farm rocks and you really ought to visit if you haven't.
Loved when these two cozied up together in these snowy trees. We just had our first snowstorm and they were down to skip the fall leaves for part of the shoot and head straight to the snow, which couldn't have been prettier. Honestly I'm so thrilled for a cold winter full of pillowy snow capped trees and flurries. Always gives photos an extra bit of something going on. If anyone wants snowy pictures I'm booking sessions through winter.
I'm dedicating tonight's post to this stunning bride who completely slayed in her black gown and veil from @altamodabridal. Her and her man also put on the raddest Friday the 13th wedding we've ever seen and the entire day was so gorgeous. The biggest little secret is that there's no right way to do a wedding. It's a party and there are no rules. Do you, make it your style and most importantly enjoy every moment of it like these guys did.
They spent the morning of their wedding getting ready together and it was absolutely beautiful. Stay tuned for more of these cuties.
So yesterday Todd and I wrapped up our last wedding of the season, landing us at 46 weddings and 120 portrait sessions in a short 6 month span. Waking up today we were completely overwhelmed with gratitude toward you all. We're the luckiest people having this opportunity to do what we love. It takes a lot of time and effort and I've never felt more fulfilled than I do now. Thanks for all your support, friendships, and for pushing us to become better photographers. I'm looking forward to a few months of shooting families, connecting with Todd and getting some wedding plans of our own nailed down.
Snow fell as they had their first look before their wedding and it was the most romantic scenario we could have dreamed of. Sidney and Matt were an absolute dream to work with. Their ideas and style went hand and hand perfectly with mine and we created some truly gorgeous images that day. So happy for the two of you. Floral: @rachelosguthorpe.
Before heading out to San Francisco I had the chance to work with @thelovelyave and @nataliewynndesign, two of my hugely talented friends who have been such positive influences on our business over the years. So many great memories of past projects flooded my mind that day and it just reminds me of how lucky I am for the friendships formed through the work I'm able to do. Also I ate steamed dumplings for the first time today and can't quit craving more. San Francisco is alright.
