We sought to raise awareness of how we can all affect the common good with a few small but meaningful actions. Specifically, the good that can only be attained through our community and shared by its members. This is the only way forward in the wake of back-to-back disasters.
Thanks to each and everyone of you that came out to support.
100% of proceeds will go to this grassroots non-profit, so don't feel limited by the $20 ticket price. If you can give more it will go to very good use. Hot Toddy's by @drinkslowandlow and other tasty beverages provided. Sweet music by @sarahrogomusic. We suggest you pre-purchase tix (see link in bio) as space is limited and we expect the screening to sell out. Huge thanks to the folks at Iron and Resin for their involvement. Moments in between disasters: a surfer trims on a small, clean point wave in Ventura as the approaching storm moves in. 12 hours later, the #thomasfire burn scar (largest wildfire in California history and still only 92% contained) would send torrents of mud and debris rushing at speeds of 50+ mph down the canyons of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, from the peaks to the ocean, wiping out entire neighborhoods and so many lives. Search and rescue efforts have just begun, leaving countless people trapped tonight. Our hearts go out those that are suffering and we thank the first responders for their tireless bravery. #castorm#montecito#venturastrong#cawx
“Following the theme of sacrificing the public’s favorite natural areas for the benefit of oil and gas companies, the Trump administration has just announced plans to expand offshore drilling in the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and Arctic Ocean. This drastic proposal opens over 90 percent of the Outer Continental Shelf to new drilling and puts our nation’s coastal communities, beaches, surf breaks, and marine ecosystems at risk of a catastrophic oil spill. The Proposed Offshore Oil & Gas Leasing Program for 2019 – 2024 would open thousands of miles of U.S. coastline to oil drilling, including regions such as the Atlantic and Pacific that have been protected for decades from this dangerous practice. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will open a 60-day comment period for citizens to provide feedback on the proposal, and the agency is also planning public hearings in affected communities in the coming weeks.
In response to the news, @surfrider Foundation’s CEO Chad Nelsen (@chadrico) issued the following statement: ‘Our ocean, waves and beaches are vital recreational, economic and ecological treasures to our coastal communities that will be polluted by new offshore oil drilling, regardless of whether or not there is a spill. Without a massive mobilization by coastal communities around the country in opposition to new offshore drilling, our voice will be drowned out by the lobbying power of Big Oil in Washington, D.C.’” - Peter Stauff, Environmental Director of @surfrider
