2 years ago, we fostered our first doggie (from @AnimalHaven). Sasha was a senior fluffy little white thing who came to the shelter with an injured paw. She also had kennel cough. My husband and I had never owned a dog in the city (I grew up in more of a rural area of France, where our dogs ran free all day, and he had never lived with a dog at all). We had just moved to a pet friendly place, and after working with rescues for so long, I knew fostering was top on my list. I was so glad Sasha was a senior white little fluffy thing with a messed up paw. Because I thought "There is NO way I will fall in love. She is NOT my kind of dog. We will foster her, and then move on with our lives feeling accomplished". Boy was I wrong. It took about, well… less than 24h for us to become completely, utterly, painfully smitten with Sasha PomPom. I gave her paw medical baths. We bought her christmas sweaters and watched over her when she didn’t eat for 3 days because of her cough. I even used a humidificator to help with her symptoms! Sasha came into our lives like a little white tornado. Day after day we wondered whether we should keep her. We didn’t feel entirely ready. I wanted to foster more, and I wasn’t sure I could fit a dog into our lives in a permanent way. And then we got the call. She'd been adopted. The next day we brought her back to the shelter and handed her over. Sten took time off work to come say his goodbyes. I gave her adopter Sasha’s "favorite" christmas sweater. All the time, I thought it was a big mistake. Her adopter could never understand Sasha PomPom the way we did. Our connection was too great. Although I trusted the shelter to find her a great home, we felt we had betrayed her, giving her away to a stranger. We cried for days after she left. We felt so empty and devastated. I thought we could never recover from the loss of Sasha. But then her adopter sent me her Instagram account: @Sasha_notsofierce4. There she was, wearing her Christmas sweater. Later, she was the flower girl at her parents’ wedding, and then she was Wonderwoman for Halloween. They clearly got Sasha PomPom the way we did. She is cherished. She is home. #FosterADog #adoptdontshop

PECONIC, NY: Cleo is a sweetheart who waited at the North Fork Animal Welfare League / Riverhead Animal Shelter (@nfawl) for a year and a half! Her team drove 2h to bring her to my speical photoshoot last week, and before I even had a chance to share her pics, she was ADOPTED!!! (Head to my story for a sweet adoption pic!). This actually happens very often. So often, as a matter of fact, that I usually warn the shelters. All we have to do sometimes is BOOK a shoot! hahahah. This is what her personal chauffeur and super fan Denise wrote to me: "It’s truly the craziest thing in the world, and I really believe that Cleo going to the photo shoot and being hailed as a star made this happen. The adopter had done community service volunteering at the shelter every day last week and we had a lot of buzz about Cleo going into the City for a photo shoot. It gave Cleo a real aura of being special, I think Cleo felt it and certainly the staff and volunteers felt it. So the serendipity here is the story. You made it happen, though not through the usual channels!". Well, whaveter the Universe had in store for Cleo, she is finally home and I couldn't be happier!! (also, GREAT way to adopt: volunteering for a few days to really get to meet the dogs and experience their life). The shelter has many more adoptable doggies who all want their moment too! HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Surcee just came to @halliehillanimalsanctuary this summer. Her first name was Onyx but they renamed her. Surcee is a term that has been passed down for generations rooted in the Carolinas. The definition of a surcee is a thoughtful, small surprise or gift. She was tied on a chain in a muddy back yard. No shelter and often her water was overturned. Her owner surrendered her right after she delivered a litter of puppies because most of the puppies didn’t survive. Sweet Surcee was very thin because of a heavy burden of internal parasites. When approached, she would flatten herself so low to the ground, it was as if she was trying to disappear. She has a slight head tilt that the vet thinks is a neurological issue of no real consequence. She barks at strangers from a distance, but cowers and runs when they approach. She is gaining confidence at the sanctuary and does excellent with other dogs that are males. When with a female, she tends to want to dominate her. For more information and to apply to adopt Surcee visit halliehill.com/dog-adoption-application. Hallie Hill does not transport their dogs, but they welcome apps from all over, as long as you are able to travel to the sanctuary to meet and pick your dog up.

Hallie Hill is a sanctuary/shelter that welcomes dogs nobody else wants or dogs that were rescued by other who gave up on them. HH doesn’t leave any dog behind, but unfortunately they aren’t well known, despite the excellent work they do! I am so excited to give them exposure. They have many highly adoptable dogs who have been waiting a while (even years sometimes!). Please help spread the word! Follow them and share their doggies!

NEW YORK: Gouda was rescued by @socialteesnyc a few months ago from a high kill LA shelter, and spent a some time in medical boarding there before traveling to NYC early December. Gouda was one of those neglected senior doggies who end up at the shelter with a litany of medical issues: his teeth were rotten, he had terrible eye and ear infections, and then he came down with a nasty URI so he was on antibiotics and under observation for a while. He’s finally all better and ready to find his forever home! This 10 to 12-year-old boy was obese when the rescue took him in but has slimmed down beautifully and is about 15 lbs now. Gouda is great with other dogs, very friendly, and low maintenance. He likes gentle walks, gets all spunky at snack time, and mostly wants to nap the afternoon away. His vision is foggy, so his foster mom says he wanders around the room gently bumping things like a Roomba until he finds his bed and snoozes. He would do best in a low energy home and deserves the very best for his golden years.

HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Elmer is a sweetheart from @HallieHillAnimalSanctuary that everyone loves. He is terrible on a leash, because the moment you put it on him he lies down in protest! He is house trained and great with other dogs and cats. The shelter actually uses him to socialize other dogs. That's how good he is! Elmer is estimated to be 12-14 years old. He is arthritic, but does fine with daily glucosamine. He had some precancerous polyps removed from his colon that were obstructing his bowels and causing him discomfort, but is doing great now. He was shy during our shoot, and such an absolute sweetheart.
For more information and to apply to adopt Elmer visit halliehill.com/dog-adoption-application. Hallie Hill does not transport their dogs, but they welcome apps from all over, as long as you are able to travel to the sanctuary to meet and pick your dog up.

This is my new absolute favorite #PitBullFlowerPower portrait!!! (includes peekaboo ear!!). Thank you Sunshine for being such a good sport!

NEW YORK, meet Sunshine from @reboundhounds! This sweet, stunning girl has been waiting for a home for a few months, cozying up in her Far Rockaway foster home (who adopted 2 of my #PitBullFlowerPower models in the past!). She is super ready to find that special someone! At 8 months old, Sunshine was surrendered at the city shelter by her owner along with four other pit bulls. The reason given was that they had "too many pets". Sunshine had been bred in the home, lived well with several children aged 8-13 years old and 5 other pit bull-type dogs. So as you can imagine, she is pretty bomb-proof!! The only thing we are not sure are cats... her previous owner reported that she would chase the cats on their home (yes, they also had cats!). Despite being beautiful, dog and kid friendly, Sunshine ended up on the euthanasia list at the city shelter (twice!). Last June, Rebound Hounds pulled her. At 1 year old and 45lbs, Sunshine is little petite bundle of love and fun. In her foster home, she lives with 5 other dogs and loves to play with them. She is pretty low key and esygoing, but also enjoys walks/runs on the beach, hikes and cuddling with humans or canines. She was really worried and shy during our shoot, so I don't think the photos shows her fun side, but they definitively show her absolute sweetest disposition. Sunshine would probably enjoy a house with another dog, as she likes the comfort of companionship.
For more info or to apply for Sunshine, fill an application on www.reboundhounds.org/adoption-application.html or email reboundhounds@gmail.com. The rescue adopts outside of NYC, within a 3h radius.

I have to say, I'm a bit disheartened. My post announcing Miranda's passing has been getting SO MUCH MORE attention on my social media than my post about Max, portrayed here, who has been waiting for a home for 7 years (at @ehrdogs in NJ). What is wrong with that picture? This is the kind of things that make me despair. I don't know what else to do, to help dogs like Max. Please, consider reading his story on my previous post, "like" the post (algorithm BS) and tag someone or share it! It's also on my Facebook page. We can do this but I need your help!! 🙏🙏🙏 #ItTakesAVillage #meanwhilehewaits #7yearsinashelter #comeonpeople

Sophie Gamand (@sophiegamand)

RANDOLPH, NJ: please help me find Max a home! In memory of dogs like Miranda (see my previous post). Superstar Maximus is a 9 year old boy who has been waiting at the shelter for 7 years.
He came to @ehrdogs in NJ from a shelter in Georgia. He got adopted in 2013 and spent 5 months with a couple until they had to move back with their parents who had a cat, and Max unfortunately isn't a fan of cats. So they brought him back to the shelter. Max waited 2 more years before he was adopted again in October 2015... only to be brought back 24h later. His adopter had taken him to the park and he grabbed a lady's purse there. The adopter brought him back the next day, which is disappointing considering how important the decompression phase is after any adoption. Eleventh Hour Rescue is determined to find him a home, and the right one this time. Maximus has to be an only pet at home. Yes. I know. So many of those are waiting in the shelter system, and they are harder to place. But so many "only pet" dogs get adopted everyday and live wonderful lives with their families! So we KNOW the right family is a click away. Please share this boy. Let's find him his person(s)! Now for the good stuff: Max loves toys. LOVES toys. Actually, I was told his toy collection is impressive and he is quite the toy connoisseur. His kennel is full of toys and blankets. Some he saves like fine wine. 🍷 Others he just has big fun with. He also loves car rides or walks, especially if there are chicken nuggets at the end of it! 🍗 Another way to his heart: massages. 💆‍♂️ Full body, half body, scratches, pet, human touch is important for this big mush who loves a big snuggle.

The whole team at Eleventh Hour Rescue has been caring for him for so many years now. They all care so deeply about this boy. There wasn't a dry eye in the room during our shoot. And the pressure is on, on my side. Because I know these photos could be the answer to their prayers. Candidates can fill out an app at ehrdogs.org. The rescue does not transport their dogs. The ideal would be taking it slow and meeting him a couple of times at the shelter. Experienced adopter is a must. .

IN MEMORIAM: I photographed Miranda in March 2016. She had been at the @warwickhumane for a while. Miranda was 9 years old. She had been found in October 2014 on the Appalachian Trail. She was emaciated, sick and very scared with wounds and old scarring. Her teeth were worn down and she only had rocks, sticks & berries in her belly. After clearing up her health issues she went to a foster home and thrived with the attention and care she got, but unfortunately, her foster could not longer foster her and she came back to the shelter. After I photographed her, and thanks to a post by @susiesseniordogs, Miranda was finally getting adoption interest! Unfortunately, that's when she was first diagnosed with cancer (tumor on her leg). The shelter decided to hold off on adoption until they had her issues under control. It was removed and she was now cancer-free! But also adopter-free... I posted her again, I pleaded. But nothing happened. Miranda waited. Sure, she was loved tremendously by the shelter people, but it's not like having your own family to spend your mornings, and days, and evenings with. Earlier this month, Miranda's cancer returned. And within days of that diagnosis, her health crashed abruptly - pale, extremely lethargic, unable to keep any food down. She was suffering and there was nothing the shelter could do to help her other than make a very difficult decision. Miranda was humanely euthanized last week, surrounded by the people at the shelter who loved her so much. My heart is very heavy today, for her and for all the people she touched. Run free, Miranda!

NEW YORK: Champ is a stunning caramel boy! He has scars, especially a giant one that runs around his neck. It was pretty impressive in person, and as you can imagine it can scare adopters away. This beautiful boy has been through so much in his life and now he is safe at @animalhaven. Champ's owner died, and after loosing his family, he was mauled by another dog -- nearly losing his head in the process, and brought to the Miami Dade shelter. He later traveled to NYC. Champ is healing well while under Animal Haven's care. He simply couldn't be any sweeter. Obviously though, from his incident, Champ isn't comfortable around large dogs so he'd probably do best in a single animal home or possibly with a small dog. He would also love to be with a human who is home for most of the day to give him the attention and care that he requires. And because our guy is pretty big, some dog handling skills would be great too. Champ's recovery is going wonderfully well and his wounds are pretty much closed and healing nicely. Champ is a bit on the plump side and could lose a bit of weight. He has a wonderful disposition and loved to snuggle with me during our shoot, gently shoving his head in my chest (I was so worried to hurt his scar, but he didn't care! He just wanted all the love). He came from Florida where he was housed with cats so we think that might be a possibility. Champ is happiest around other people and is super friendly with humans. For more information, visit www.AnimalHavenShelter.org or call the shelter at 212 2748511.

HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Dane is an older gentleman brought to @HallieHillAnimalSanctuary when he was younger because he had separation and storm anxiety. He has barely any teeth left from chewing doorways or gates when he was anxious. Dane has now been waiting for a home for 7 years. Of course, life at Hallie Hill isn't bad (it's actually pretty great), but nothing compares to having your own family to hang out with every single day. Dane now has arthritic hips, but gets along well with a small dose of NSAIDS and glucosamine. He is great with people and dogs. The shelter uses him to socialize other dogs all the time. He has a great personality and will talk to you (bark) if you are fixing his meals too slowly or if he suspects you have a treat in your pocket that you are hiding from him. Hahaha!

NEW YORK: Andraya was rescued a few weeks back from a high kill shelter in Los Angeles, and then traveled to New York where she is waiting for a home. She is about 9 years old and only 4.8 lbs (so teeny tiny!), but she could stand to gain a few ounces. When the rescue first took her in, she had a severe luxating patella in one of her hind legs that was causing her a lot of pain, and she had a mouth full of rotting teeth, so she had surgery to correct both -- and is now mostly (adorably) toothless. Being a mature girl, she's also got cataracts in both eyes, but that's just kind of older dog foggy vision, and the vet doesn't recommend any treatment for it because she gets around mostly fine (just bumps into things once in a while in a new environment). She also has a heart murmur. Poor Andraya was about to be euthanized in Los Angeles, but she is such a bright, loving little thing, @socialteesnyc had to pull her to safety! She deserves to find that special place to be spoiled for the rest of her life. Andraya is doing great in her foster home, she's got spunk, she walks with a chipper skip (and looks like a mouse at the end of a leash). She is great with other dogs, she likes to cuddle, she's housebroken, and she sometimes even plays with toys. She would do best in a low energy home where she can nap the day away in the lap of someone who loves her.

Introducing a short series I shot last week! I invited a few local NY/NJ rescues to bring their long timers or difficult-to-adopt doggies. I wanted to give these doggies special exposure before/during the holidays. Animal Haven was so generous to provide their space for this special photoshoot and I am very grateful to have them in my life! I will be sharing the results over the next days/weeks. Please consider sharing these special doggies!. .

NEW YORK: Meet Diamond! She was rescued after Hurricane Irma in Florida, and made her way to @AnimalHaven in New York over a month ago. She recently went on a hike with a shelter staff and was a dream in the car and loves to snuggle with her humans. She has a highly kissable bottom lip which is absolutely adorable. She also has the face of a doggie who has gotten into trouble before 😬😅, and although she is pretty easy going, she cannot be around other dogs. Yep, this sweet little thing isn't a fan of other canines unfortunately. For that reason, we know she will be a bit harder to place, but she has so much more to offer and is a great, loving, warm human companion. AMAZING ADOPTION! Guess who went home this yesterday?! Hubert from @fultonanimalservices! If you've missed his story from a few days back: Last November 13th 2017, Hubert was found as a stray, emaciated, his legs covered in cuts and in rough overall shape. It seemed as if Hubert had had to fend for himself for a while. He was of course microchipped, so the shelter immediately called the owners who adopted him from them back in August 2016. They asked the man on the phone if he knew that Hubert was at the shelter, and the man replied "how would I know, I gave him away a long time ago"... 😭😭 Well this time Hubert only waited a few days! His foster mom wrote: "Hubert, such a sweet but broken soul just got a Christmas miracle. Mom and Dad were told that you must move very slowly with Hubert to gain his trust. When Hubert got scared and growled at Dad, he laid himself on the break room trailer floor and allowed Hubert to come to him in his own time. After a while, Dad was even allowed to move slowly and give him a pet. Once Hubert met his two fur sisters, his confidence soared and the deal was sealed. May he forever know true love and never have his heart broken again.". Welcome home, Hubert! (paws crossed this one is for good 🙏!). Adoption pic by @DaniIngels. Thanks @gabstersmitty for sending me the good news!

UPDATE MONTREAL PIT BULL BAN: I am a bit late to the party (spent yesterday retouching my Thursday shoot, stay tuned for adorable doggies from New York)… But in case you haven’t heard, yesterday, the City of Montreal led by @val_plante who was elected new mayor a few weeks back, announced that it will be moving forward with a suspension of all the provisions of the Montreal Animal Control by-law that target specific breeds or types of dogs. Simply put, they are ending the pit bull ban!!! YOOHOO According to the press release issued yesterday by the City of Montreal, the suspension will come into effect on December 20th. So many owners will breathe a bit better. And what a traumatic experience this past year must have been. The @spcamontreal has already announced that it welcomes this news, and is looking forward to assisting the new administration with the development of effective and fair measures to address the issue of dog bites.
This is obviously a major victory for all involved, and all the dog owners of Montreal. I really hope they can create and implement good bylaws that can become examples for all the cities and countries around the world that are banning pit bulls, displacing and dislocating families every day. If you remember Milo who was recently seized in the UK, his battle still goes on. Victory, YES. But we can do so much better, and hopefully we will!

.

HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Hanky was rescued by a good samaritan from “death row” at a crowded animal shelter in Atlanta. He had lots of anxiety back then, and his rescuer felt overwhelmed. He heard of @halliehillanimalsanctuary and surrendered Hanky to them 5 years ago. Hanky has been waiting ever since. He can live with other dogs, and is friendly to every person he meets. He has “dry eye” syndrome, which requires daily lubricating drops to increase his tear production. Hanky is a very sweet boy- but good luck trimming his nails!!! He doesn’t get aggressive, but he does what HH calls an alligator roll maneuver. So, it is a team effort to get the terrible deed done! He has the biggest smile and knows how to sit! And I mean... what a character!! Hanky is full of life and funny expression, and he will definitively brighten anyone's life! *** update: adopted Dec. 9! *** ATLANTA, GA: Hubert is back at @fultonanimalservices and I am furious at the circumstances. This is what shelters have to deal with on a daily basis. Sometimes it feels like there is no winning... I photographed Hubert in Aug. 2016. He had been waiting for 1 year at the shelter already. The shelter and I posted an out take from our #PitBullFlowerPower shoot, and a family saw it and fell in love with Hubert. He went home. Or so we thought... Last November 13th 2017, Hubert was found as a stray, emaciated, his legs covered in cuts and in rough overall shape. It seemed as if Hubert had had to fend for himself for a while. He was of course microchipped, so the shelter immediately called the owners who adopted him back in August 2016. They asked the man on the phone if he knew that Hubert was at the shelter, and the man replied "how would I know, I gave him away a long time ago". 😳😶😶😶 How you can adopt a dog from a shelter, then turn around and give him up to a random person and never look back, is s mystery to me. I am so infuriated. The worst part is that Hubert is an adorable, loving, awesome dog. He is just about 2-3 years old now, with so many years to give! He was housed with several other dogs in the same kennel at the shelter with zero incident (they are pretty crowded and trying really hard to remain no kill). Now he is decompressing in a foster home. Life is scary for him right now.
Please, please, please, share this sweet boy or consider him! You can also offer to foster for this shelter! They really need to get some doggies out, especially after taking in 50 dogs from a hoarding situation over the weekend (50 medium/large dogs living in a house 😩). Their intake numbers are pretty high and they just don't have enough room for everyone.
